Want to see what peoples thoughts are on when you are suppose to change the water impeller on a 1998 mercury 175 efi? Two Mercury dealers told me every two years it should be changed no matter what!! This will be my third season on a impeller and it still has good pressure at the gauge. Are the dealers just trying to get my money for the part or is there a specific reason why it has to be changed every two years?

Thank You

I change mine either every other or sometimes during the third year. May be overkill, but it's amazing how dried out those things can get.

I had a 200 EFI... first of all, it is a great motor. My brother bought my boat and it is still running so strong. I did change mine every other year. I would guess that if you don't put many hours on the boat...you could go longer. I just believed that new impellers are cheap compared the harm poor circulation could cause. That said, we did and still do put tons of hours on that boat each summer.

I have replaced the impeller with the oem part and the old wons never looked dried out, cracked or any visable wear. Talked to several people that have not changed there impeller for 5 to 8 years and never had any issues!

What are some indications your impeller is going bad/drying out/whatever it is they do?

No real inticators , what happens is the blades on the impeller will bend over not forcing good water pressure, or fall apart & restrict water flow or worse keeping the impeller from spinning all together...Not GOOD, i would DEFINETLY not run my motor impeller for more then 2 years...Not worth it to me!!!

As long as you have a good stream of water coming out, you should
be ok.. yes??

I have a 1996 175efi and just changed the impeller a couple weeks ago. Best to have an extra set of hands in case the spline don't quit line up in the power head. I change every 3-4 years and do notice more pressure at idle.
