Location: Des Moines IA | OK guys, help me settle a dispute with Captain Ahab. What's your best option for mono backing to braid? |

| prolly dont even need it with most reels or two wraps of electrical tape...kinda a hassle to use mono |

Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | I just buy a big 1500yd+ spool from e-bay then you don't have to worry about the price of line and using backing. When the lure end gets some wear on it, just wind it on a different reel (unused spool end will now be the lure end), if you have cut a bunch of line off, wind it on a reel that hold less line, or wind it on a tip up.
Like mentioned, always wrap some electrical tape on the spool first. It makes good band-aids too.

| Prolly shouldn't be hijacking your thread here but...why do you use backing at all? Just spool it up all the way with braid, then you can flip it over later in the season. If you're worried about it slipping, tie it through a hole in the spool before you rell it up. No hole? Drill one.

| No need to even use backing. A couple peices of electrical tape works fine. |

| 20 pound berkely big game. Why? I had three spools of it. As for filling the spool all the way with braid? WHY? You only use a cast length of line, plus whatever you cut off during a season. Even if you flip it every year you've got a majority of the line on the spool that will never see water. |

+1! I find myself using more and more backing every year as I had far too much unused braid on my reels. The reason for using so much backing is because we want the reel spool full of line as that gives us maximum retrieve speed. If you fill the spool with just braid and cut off used line every year, you are eventually going to get down to a spool that is half full or even less. Having a less than full spool will make you work harder as you will have to reel more to achieve the speed of a full spool. Probably could be explained better, but hope that makes sense. |

A 150 yd spool will usually fit perfectly on the reels I have anyways. This way there are no worries of not enough line after cutting 20 yds off due to backlash, etc...
But for you guys who NEVER get backlashes, I suppose some mono backing with 75 yds of line works. |

Really? What makes it not slip on the spool?
I see using mono for backing as a 2-fold effect -- Braid slips on smooth spools, but mono will grip it; and to take up space on the spool so you are not using so much every season like it has been mentioned. |

I remember having a blacklash once. Man, those were good times. Good times. LOL. |

Location: Racine, Wi | I've been using 20# mono that I got cheap at Wally World. No need to fill the entire spool up with braid like EA mentioned as half that line will never even see action. usually put about 100 yards or so on each spool, flip it every year. Still have the middle section that shows very little use. |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | I always use backing, I can get 3-4 fills of 100 or 75 yds from a 300yd spool of braid. Plus if U get a bad backlash it will only go down to the backing. I use about 75-100 yds of braid on a reel at one time. With the price of braid why would you fill it up ?????? |

| I put duct tape on my spool then fill it up with 80# braid. For me the line grips the duct tape better than the electric tape with the smooth face. I cut 4-5 feet of line off every 10hrs of casting and retie less if a fish rolls in it. I go through the spool by fall. The first couple feet of line takes a beating.
Good Luck

I'm cheap....I like to use what I pay for...also like a full spool. |

Location: Minnesota | To use entire spool on a reel would just be a total waste, IMO... Mono is CHEAP... and it works well... Even most guides would put on 75-100yds of Braid on their reels... They say that it lasts much longer... and saves you tons of money... money that could be spent on other things such as lures, gas, etc etc if you added it all up... |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | Not only $$$$ but if fill a spool up with 200 plus yds of braid and U get a bad backlash it will dig in all the way in the bottom of the spool of braid, if U use mono backing the backlash will stop at the mono !!!!!!! I have seen braid that digs in so bad U have cut all the line off the spool and refill. |

| I have used everything from 10lb to 20lb mono, I don't think it really matters, it is a filler and prevents slipping on the spool. I use backing mostly for cost reasons=less braid. Just at gander the other day and they had 330yd spools of suffix 17lb mono for $5 in the clearance bin-perfect backing.

Location: Ames, Iowa | I go out in front of the house and tie off and find the halfway point of a 150 yard spool- 75 yards- 150 feet. That goes onto the backing, which is about #20 mono, and I have a bunch of cheaper spools of that stuff around. I can use that a season or two and then switch ends and cast with the previously unused end. Not too many casts past 100 feet for me unless I'm throwin a jackpot or other heavy wood bait with my jerkbait rods. Have never tried the duct tape on the spool. |
