Location: Hayward, WI | I did a search on this and most of the info I found is a couple years old. Figured I would ask again and see what is out there now.
Looking for a new digital camera. Budget is rougly $350. Hoping to find something that can take good quality pictures, and is relatively easy to use. Probably mostly used as point and shoot, but wouldn't mind being able to override automatic settings and do some manual adjusting too. A rechargeable battery pack would be nice but not a requirement. Something that dosn't need several seconds to recover after a picture, especially when using the flash, would be high on the list of priorities.
Quite a high priority would be a good self timer feature for fishing alone. My camera now can be set to have a delay of I think 1-30 seconds, and take anywhere from 1-10 pictures. I REALLY like that feature.
A remote with decent timer feature would also be considered.
This will be a camera for my wife and I, not just a boat camera. So it will be used for scenery shots, hunting shots, pictures of the dog, family, etc.
I'll be doing some more research in the mean time, but does anybody have good recommendations?
Thanks much,
Tucker |

| When it comes to cameras, I personally like the Canon brand. I have a Canon Powershot SD870IS that is a few years old now and has taken a beating and still produces top-notch pictures. It has been dropped by my 4 year old kicked by my 2 year old and used by my technically challenged wife and still going strong. All kidding aside, I purchased that camera for my wife (I use a Canon DSLR) because of its ease of use for her and still have the options to change some settings when I want to. I would stick with the rechargeable battery for sure; I have just had better luck with cameras with a rechargeable battery. My self-timer can be changed from 1sec to 10se, 15sec, 20sec or 30sec and will take anywhere from 1 to 10 pictures at a time. For $350 you will be getting a real nice point-and-shoot camera. I am from the Chicago area and we have a store called Calumet Photo who has been very helpful for me. Another store, Wolf Camera, is in the area but I have fount the people at Calumet know their stuff better. I hope this helps and good luck!

| 350 for a point and shoot is ALOT. Do not get fooled by high mega-pixels inflating the price. That really only matters if you are going to blow pictures up.
For that kind of money, maybe a little more, I would be looking at a DSLR. You can make them do anything you want and upgrade them with lenses and flashes in the future if you wish.
Go with good brands Nikon and Canon would be the top two. Thes guys make the glass for space stations, observatories the hubble telescope.....camera's are childs play for them. |

| I have a pentax 80. Thanks to the advice of Brad Nelson. It fits my style of fishing nice and I seem to get very good pictures. I've tried numerous others and they just were either too complicated, bulky, or didn't take good pictures.
Every once in awhile I have the opportunity to fish with someone who has photography as their primary hobby. Then I expect a different type of camera and approach to photo taking.
For a fisherman who is not an expert on photography with that as my hobby; I am very happy with the pentax. (thanks Brad!) |

Location: APPLETON, WI | The point 'n shoot that gets stowed away in my Plano waterproof utility box when I go fishing is a Panasonic Lumix. Takes awesome photos, simple to use and plenty of features. I do have a nice D-SLR camera but that doesn't go anywhere near a fishing excursion. My point 'n shoot is perfect, compact and is more than adequate enough to do a great job with my fishing photos....
My vote for the Panasonic Lumix. |

Location: MN | I had Pentax WPI for 3 years ans it's great camera for the money I payed. Now I use Pentax W30 for fishing and outdoor activity. Waterproof (for real), shock resistant + it makes good quality pictures. Very simple interface and it has the same set of options as other cameras. Video quality is either not bad. I'd say great camera for the money too. For other things I bought Canon PowerShot SX130 and I can say it makes better pictures, but I don't want to go outside with it. |

| I've been using the Cannon Powershot SD400. Real nice camera to bring on the boat and has taken quite a few awesome pics of some fish. Love the self-timer option and the user friendly options it has. I even dropped it in the lake and the camera still works great. In my opinion get yourself a Cannon you won't be disappointed. |

Location: Land of the Musky | Far under your budget but I use FujiE550 digital cameras. They take great pictures and also video. You can pick them up on eBay for $30-$50. I have 4 right now but over 5 years have only broken one. I use the money saved to buy large high quality SD cards for them. |

Location: Minneapolis | 2nd the Panasonic Lumix; they take great pictures. Now you can get one that's waterproof; the DMC-TS2. You can use it underwater to 33'. It takes very good HD video. Fun to take underwater release shots! The self timer and works well, but I don't think it supports a remote, and I think it only can do a 3-shot burst in self-timer mode.
Waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, and works well at temperatures below freezing. All good things for me. |

| I love the Panasonic Lumix model DMC-ZS5. Have A Canon powershot S2 IS but it is somewhat unpredictable as far as what it is focusing on when the pic is snaped, but that could be users fault. |

Location: Land of 10,000 Lakes | Thumbs-up for the Pentax Optio W Series. I have both the W20 & W30 and use them for fishing, hunting and snorkeling on warm weather vacations. You can probably pick-up a used W20 or W30 for about $100 or less on EBAY. |
