Location: Sycamore, IL | Looking for advice on what prop to get. I have a 1996 Johnson 50hp 2stroke 3cyl tiller engine on a Tuffy Esox LTD of the same year. Busted up my prop at Kinkaid last week and need a new one quick. What pitch should I get? My choices seem to be between 9 and 23 degree(?) pitch. Also, I will be sticking with aluminum. Thanks for the help...

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | Do you know what pitch prop was on there? I would replace it with the same unless you wanted to change the performace a bit. My guess would be between a 13 and a 17 pitch. |

If the prop is an OMC prop that had the plastic anti-ventilation ring around the exhaust hub, all you would need to do is take the prop off the lower unit. The stamp for the diameter and pitch should be under it.
If it is not there, check the side of the prop hub. It might be stamped there.
Last place to check would be on the front side of the prop where it meets the lower unit.
If there is not a pitch and diameter listing you can find, a serial or prop identification number will be enough to do a web search for the right prop.
That particular motor will have the larger gear case which will put you in a 13-1/4" diameter range, and I would guess somewhere around a 13 - 15 pitch, with the outside chance of being 17.

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I had a 50 Evinrude with the big gearcase many years ago. It ran nicely with a 15" pitch prop unless the boat was extremely overlaoded. I could run a 17" prop with a very light load and even on a regular load my 600# fiberglass hull would perform OK but it took longer to break on plane than the 15" pitch. !5" would be the safe bet I think.

Location: Duluth, MN | I had a 96 60hp Johnson on a 17 lund pro angler and had a 15 and 17 prop. There wasn't a real big difference but I would go with the 15 for more power with a 50 hp. |

I would say check ebay... I have purchased many props off of there, both new and used.. Craigslist sometimes has them, but ebay is a solid bet...
