I bought a St Croix Premier Mukie spinning rod for my Dad's use (he does not like baitcasters and I do not feel like getting out backlashes every 5 minutes) when he comes up here in a few weeks. I have a Spirex 4000 I can match up with the rod.

Is it OK to use PowerPro on a Spirex 4000?

Hey Now,
I use a St Croix 7ft MH spinning rod with a Shimano Stradic 4000. Last year I was using 20-lb spider wire, worked just fine.
I would not go much heavier than about 30-lb test.

Just for laughs I am trying 12-lb mono this season, but I have 30-lb TUFline on my very similar backup rod, a 7ft BassPro Extreme with a Sidestab 4000.

A couple lure ideas for this setup: I really like it for smaller Hawg Wobblers, bucktails of any kind, and the Bucher Baby Depth Raiders.

Spinnerbaits should work well too, but make sure you have the spinnerbaits with a closed loop for the clasp, so the leader doesn't slip up around the blade.

Don't worry kids, I also use baitcasters. Just like spinning equipment for the mid-size lures and for a rest from throwing the big baits...
Plus, chicks dig spinning reels.

Have a groovy day,

I have a spirex 4000 and use tuf-line plus 20 lbs. this is a red hot combo and much faster than fireline![;)]

I use the Spirex 4000 w/ 50lb. Power Pro for both saltwater + freshwater rockfish + such + love it! I especially like the low to no stretch for saltwater; better hookups etc. I think you will be well pleased, especially if it the rear drag set model.

Sponge Bob, I do have the rear drag model.

I think my Dad will like this set up!

30lb/50lb? Isn't 30 lb equivilant to 8 or 10lb mono? Seems weak to me?

You should be fine w/ the 50lb...in fact I like what Joe said about the 30lb, but surf fishing I zing a mullet w/ 2-3 ozs of lead, + use spoons up to 3 ozs so I started w/ 50lb. A buddy of mine uses 20lb + does ok w/ it. Try a spool of 30 + 50 + I think you will like it ok.....

I have two spirex's but they are a 1000 and 2000. Both are spooled with fireline. It works terrific on spinning equiptment. Never tried the limper braids, was always afraid it would frequently tangle but hey it sounds like it works good.
