Fiberglass hull cleaners

Just curious for the fiberglass boat owners out there. What do you guys use to clean/wipe down your hulls after pulling your rig out of water? Is there a better product over others out there or do you just use a dry towel to get water scum off?

Do you do any further protection or treatment to your hull during storage months?

Thanks

Right out of the water - sponge, bucket of water, towel to dry
Sits a couple days - some form of all-purpose cleaner - Formula 409, Simple Green, etc
Cleaned a few times a year - fiberglass cleaner made by 3M (I use the tube) and apply with one rag, wipe away with another

I like to give the boat and trailer (if applicable) a coat of wax at least once a year. I generally do it before a big trip.

I use two things. One is Captain Chomp and the other is vinegar and water.

Bass Boat Saver every time I take it out of the water. It keeps the boat shiny and keeps scum off. It also smells great.

Another vote for BBS for between use maintenance. Good product, easy to use, and makes successive cleanings easier, as the scum doesn't seem to stick as easily.

You guys that fish the Fox chain must have to put a fresh layer of fiberglass and gel coat on your boats, or another sheet of aluminum on after boating around in that Muck......Cause mankind hasn't come up with a cleaner that can cut the Scum from that system !!
WOW !

Ok, so what if your boat has had a little bit of scum over the coarse of 15 yrs, and it has now added up to the hull just being a dingy brown instead of pearl white? It all started with my parents keeping the boat in a channel for a few years straight during the whole season. I've tried using tons of stuff, even including laundry soap and bleach. What's the magic potion?

Lime Away let it sit for a few minutes and rinse off... Works pretty good on the dingy scum. Then nice fresh coat of wax and it should look pretty good.

Acetone,
Two swipes and the brown scum is gone along with a few brain cells,... Oh, don't be smoking either.
You'll have to re-wax it for sure.

Acid wash is a good way to handle that problem. It's not cheap... 20ft boats can cost up to $1000 with a wash and detailed. My buddy does it every year and the boat looks brand new come opener. It's worth it if you want your boat looking brand new without the labor or time to get it looking great on your own. That's one of the reasons why I always trailer my boat. I've seen too many boats stored at slips during the season and look horrible.

For the bad stuff try ZING. It will clean it like new. I did my motor and hull then washed everything with soap and water, waxed it. That ZING is something. Be carefull with it. It is put on with a toilet bowl type brush then you hose it off. Everything comes off in seconds. Even the Fox chain scum. Not very good for the wax I would bet. this is why I only use it when I am going to completely clean my rig. Its great for the white build up on motors. Cleans them like new. Brush it on and rinse it off as soon as you get done brushing the spot. I can do my whole boat in less than an hour and for around $25 bucks. Do not get it on plastic, it turns it a lighter shade. Cheap easy clean if your boat needs a good cleaning.
