Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | Twitch and soft baits/finesse in the spring...baby bucks....topwaters once there's baby ducks.
Summer, whatever makes them move which could be anything but glides & jerkbaits are big. Bucks are year round till they bounce off the water.
Fall I don't fish allot of dawgs but this is when they shine, big, bad & beautiful. Gliders the size of your dog, and blade baits you could use for dinner plates. Unless they want small......:-) |

Location: Hayward, WI | As broad as that question is, there are a few baits that come to mind. If I had one to choose, it would be the large (~ 8 oz) Hardhead from H20 Tackle. It is a wood head with replaceable rubber tail. You can turn the tail up or down as well as use screw in weights to fish the bait anywhere from just under (and probably even on) the surface to as deep as you need to fish. I have caught fish on a Hardhead from opening day up until as late in the season as I fish. Extremely versatile and effective bait.
Another good bait to use all year is the Triple D. Suspending crankbait that is easy to work deeper but can be forced to stay a little shallower if you want.
Flat sided crankbaits like Slammers or Big Game baits can also be pretty effective year long. Twitched shallow in the spring, cranked and ripped in the summer and fall.
Those stick out, but you can certainly use Mag Dawgs, spinnerbaits, various topwaters, etc. all year and have good luck with them.

Early summer: suckers, even though they die so quickly and rarely get eaten
Mid summer: suckers, even though I konw it's a 2 months+ before I can fish them again
Late summer: suckers, because I know it's only a month or so before I can fish with them
Early fall: suckers, even though they die so quickly and rarely get eaten
Mid fall: suckers
Late fall: suckers
Winter: Well, the lakes are frozen and the season is closed. But if I could fish? heheh. SUCKERS!! |
