How Big?

I caught this bass while musky fishing in N. Wisconsin over the Labor day weekend. I hope that the picture is clear enough to give an idea of the hit that a musky put on this bass. I put this bass over 4 lbs for sure. My hand is about 7 inches long and 4 inches wide when closed if that helps when trying to judge the width of the bite mark. Any guesses on the size of the fish to make a mark like this are welcome.[:0]

My guess is 54" + 43 lbs...BUT...more importantly, the attack on the bass reinforces my theory that the thrashing darting action of the fish triggered the attack, + not the fact that the bass was a prefered meal...did the fish hit near the boat?

Did the musky hit it while you were busy trying to land it or had it been hit before you caught it?

I have one over the fireplace that is 52". The jaws would be about 6" wide open but not terribly flared, creating cuts from 6 to 7" depending on the angle the bass was at the point of attack.

From what I can see in the photo,(that is an oddly shaped wound) my best guess (with the thrashing that was probably going on) is in the 50" up to mid 50" class. A shorter fish may have jaws that wide or may have attacked at an angle. No matter, it was a lucky day for the bass to escape!

Must have been a nice fish, did you get a look at it? I seen Gillespie fishing the mad chain once and he had on a 2.5lb. bass and a muskie came up and chomped it right on camera.

On vacation labor day weekend, I was talking to the resort owner who told me about an ice fishing adventure. He hooked a big walleye(he caught it, 10lbs.). While bringing it in he felt something very heaviy and could not budge it. He kept the line very tight for 20min. not trying to break it before the fish let go. He never saw it but it had to be a giant.

How big?

I'm 4 inches. Now, some women don't like 'em that wide....

I wonder if this one will get pulled.

Deleted. Not Pulled. This one. I wonder if this post will get deleted.

Oh nevermind.

Hard to tell by the picture, as it looked like it might have had it from the tail, and the bass slid through its mouth a bit. By the depth of the cuts though I'd say it was a nice one, but hard to say really how big. I've had some big suckers completely mangled by some fish that I thought were much bigger, due to multiple bites, and pulling the sucker through its' mouth.

The fish was not hit by the muskie on the way in. It happened prior to me hooking it. The hit looked as if the bass was taken from the belly straight up. There are marks on the other side of the bass that mirror those in the pic.
