| What set ups does everyone use for leaders on there trolling rigs??? And for line, Mono or braid?... Mostly fish darker stained water if that matters, thanks guys!!!

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Not a big troller myself, but always keep my ear to the ground for what the die-hards use. 50lb mono line. Mono is used because it has the slightest bit of stretch when the fish hits at 4.5 mph. Braid has 0 stretch, and I've heard of hooks getting ripped out. 60-100lb Flouro or Mono leader. Flouro leader is better because it doesn't soak up water and become weak. Flouro will last longer. Also, make it around 36" long. Take a treble hook, and cut the points off. Attach it to the swivel so it catches any debris that might be following the line down. With it 3' away from the lure, it won't foul. |

Thinner the diameter (mono) less line you need out to achieve lure depth. Whereas using heavier line (braid) you have to let out more line to achieve depth.
No, that's backwards. 50lb mono averages around 0.028". 80lb Power Pro is 0.017". So, for example, a jointed DepthRaider will hit 10' down with 52' of Power Pro out, but it takes 81' of 50lb Mono. |

Leaders: 60" 100# floro from Stealth tackle.
if you are pulling boards on your line they stay on the mono line far better.
As some one else stated there is a little stretch in the line and is more forgiving. You need to have your drag a little tighter with mono.
I used to troll with braid but lost more fish. Have not trolled with braid for 7 years
I cut off 8' of line and retie every 10hrs of trolling with mono and braid that first 5'-6' feet realy takes a beating.
Have caught fish over 40# with no problem with this set up.

Location: Racine, Wi | I typically run both braid and mono. I run 20 and 30# Pline as well as 65-80# braid depending on how deep I want to get my baits. Leaders I use 63"-48" in 100# floro. |

| I run 3 foot 150 lb fluoro. The reason for a longer leader as opposed to a 12 inch is that sometimes a muskie will roll in the line before the rod is out of the holder. With a short leader, that means rolling in 80 or 100 lb braided line which can cut pretty deeply.
The reason for 150 lb fluoro as opposed to 80 or 100 lb, apart from its obvious increase in strength, is that the thicker fluoro is just that much likely to cut in.
I am willing to give up a bit of deep for the added protection it provides a fish that is going to be released.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | My general trolling rods are rigged with 50lb Sunline Super Natural mono as mainline and 80# flouro leaders 5-6' long.
I've got a couple rock crusher rigs that have 100# braid with leders of 150# flouro or 120# sevenstrand depending on the severity of the rock bashing.
The long leaders allow you to add weight in front of the lure to control depth and it will catch weeds. If you don't want to add weight you can cut the points off a treble just below the barb and attach that at the end of the leader to catch weeds. |

what he said, dont listen to these guys using mono or 30 inch leaders, , just back your drag off a little less than what you have it for casting and youll be fine

Like I said earlier, I'm not a big troller, but just follow suite to what most big trollers are doing. Like the guys on LSC. Some guys that are out there - well that's ALL they do. Troll. And they'll put over 400 fish in the boat each year. So who ya gonna listen to? The guys on LSC or someone who doesn't even know how to register on a forum? |

Location: Racine, Wi | If you're looking to just troll once in a while, I'm sure you'll be fine with a 12" leader. However, when looking for dedicated trolling rigs, you will want to go with the longer leaders. Like mentioned above, when trolling enough, you'll get fish that do roll in the line. Also, like Will said, you can add weights to the leader and having the longer lead keeps the weights further from your bait which keeps the baits running good (no disturbance from weight), and it will keep some of the floaters off of your baits.
SVT, keeping the rod tips in the water will help keep the weeds off of your baits as well when there are lots of floaters on the water.

Location: Alexandria, MN | If you plan on trolling a lot of Canadian shield type water with a lot of rock structure, you may want to use the longer leaders (at least 30"), as they help prevent line fray and breakoffs brought on by making contact with the rocks. Short leaders are fine for open water, but if you troll the structure, the long leaders may save you a few lost lures. |
