that's not exactly right - Paypal will charge a fee to the sender of the money as a gift, instead of charging the fee to the recipient who is the "merchant" in a sales transaction.

What Greg said. Normal transactions, the seller pays fees. On a 'gift' transaction, the buyer pays the fees. If you don't want either party to pay fees, you can do a "personal" transaction, and click on "other". That's what I do if my wife and I are sending money to eachother's accounts.

I am not a paypal expert but I believe if the seller has a "verified account" bank account linked to their paypal it doesn't cost either party anything to use the service. If the sellers account is unverified a fee will be applied to the sender of the payment if sent as gift.

you wont be protected if you send as a gift meaning you send me a gift of money and the seller doesnt send you product you arent protected because you sent it as "gift" dirty as it seems its just giving away money on good faith

cod is the best option, gets paid when package comes everyone is happy if not paid for it comes back to you and sorry you lost a couple bucks but not ur product

Only if PayPal had a page for this... https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees&nav=4.0.4

As you can tell PayPal payment are separated into two main categories, Purchase and Personal. Each category is split up even further, and the Gift option is under Personal payment. If you choose to send the payment as a gift, the seller won't be charged any fees, but this takes away from the safety/protection feature of PayPal. As you sent the payment as a gift and PayPal did not charge any fees, so you are pretty much out of luck if you get scammed.

with the cod option you're talking about you will pay a $5 to $6 fee cod is not free and if the sender sets it up for you to pay with a check the fee is more. Everything you order either from here or a online store you just have to be careful who you deal with. Maybe the seller sould just add what it takes to cover tranaction on a $100 it's like $4 to a paypal

COD is expensive and doesn't protect against the package being empty or having garbage instead of the correct stuff.
Paypal funds sent as a gift has about the same amount of protection for the seller as using a check/money order. Possibly even less, think about it for a second, you are NEVER going to see that money again, you weren't scammed you gifted someone cash.
Paypal funds sent as a purchase gives the buyer protection at the sellers expense, which is then translated to the asking price then.

The only problem with paying someone with the GIFT payment is if your goods are Damaged, missing, or you are just not happy with them......GOOD LUCK...... nothing can be done. And you are Beat.....It just happened to me a few weeks ago I purchased a Dunwright tackle box on this site and I received it with two sides and a bottom corned cracked and I was out of luck. The seller told me to epoxy it, and offered $5.00......Needless to say I told him to keep the $5 as it sounds like he needs the money more than me.............. So do not send Gift money, use standard PayPal or pass on the item.......Mike Sr.

Thanks guys, I see the point of "gift" now, being a optomistic person I would assume anyone I buy from or sell to to be honest so I would be doing that in the future i suppose, on higher end products/prices I would think differently. Reason being if someone really want to screw someone over a 5-10-20 dollar lure, Im pretty sure they wont be around this site or will be well known for being a seller/buyer scumbag..

Just an FYI there are only no fees if the funds come from a paypal balance or bank account.

Personal Transfer
Send money Receive money

Free when the money comes from PayPal balance or bank account.
2.9% + $0.30 USD

when the money comes from a debit or credit card or PayPal Credit

(the sender decides who pays this fee).

Never been charged any fees on the GIFT option either way. And I have never had a problem with any item bought or sold as a GIFT on this site-----I have done quite a few transactions both buying and selling---Lots of good people on here and all has gone well for me---Thanks to all who have been honest. I am sure as always there may be some Bad apples in the bunch but I have faith with all the MUSKY Fisherman I have run across here.

Esox911,

Then you have not dealt with momuskies (Kyle Hilger). This person IS NOT one that anyone should do any business with.

Speaking of which...

If you have been waiting on a bait or your money back from Kyle, and if you are willing, please PM me with the details of the transaction: date, item, cost, etc. I am looking to put together a list of names to call the local police and see if that will get some lures sent out, or money sent back.

We need a section in the classified section where we can post about our buying and selling experiences with the the forums members. Good guy bad guy list. We have one on the WVSportsman.net site. It can gives confidence to the buyer and the seller. I've had very good experiences in the last two weeks from two of the members of this site.

if you pay with gift and get ripped off you would have to sue the person and you hardly have a case because u sent it gift... cod at least it comes to u u pay if ur quick u have a witness the ups guy to say hey man the box is empty ...although its not their job... there is no feedback system on this site and no one should be trusted so i dont know why you bother to b/s/t unless ur getting paid first plain and simple

I have problem with a seller and tried to open a dispute with paypal but it says not available for this transaction, not a purchase I sent as a gift. I guess I am screwed. He has a receipt that he mailed the lure to my zip code but he got the money and I got nothing, no lure no refund and to top it off he is blaming me!

I am done using paypal as a gift, when something goes sour even if you have done business with someone before, you are at their mercy.

Maybe we need a resolution center on this board, cant imagine it though
I have bought and sold some great stuff here and met a lot of great people and made friends but it only takes one to ruin it for everyone.

if you were using paypal then you should be refunded 100% even shipping charges...its the sellers responsibilty to get it delivered to you, if its lost its his problem thats why he should have shipped it insured... if your using gift im pretty sure ur just screwed and the gift option should only be used for just that....a gift of money.... paypal should be on your side if you never got the package and whoever delivered it doesnt show it as delivered... i think u got 45 days, otherwise you can call your credit card company or bank whoever it went thru see what they say

The last two transactions that I did through PayPal I did as a purchase and not a gift because I was afraid of not getting my merchadise. They both ask me to ship as a gift. The money went straight from my bank to theirs and there should not have been a charge. The deals went off without a hitch.

That's not even close to true..

Protect yourself, and do not use Pay Pal gift.

Be certain of your deal before sending money or the item.

We neither have the time or inclination to enter in to your personal transactions, and provide this board with those clear caveats.
