I'm strongly considering purchasing one of these two boats. I love both layouts but I'm not sure about going aluminum or going with the 1700 which can only run a 60HP.

How much better will the 1700 fish in wind (i.e boat control and drift)?

Can the 1700 tiller be converted to an esox like the console versions?

I spoke with a dealer who has a non-current 1700. He claimed he had a sticker from Tuffy and he could put a 70 HP Yamaha on it. Sounded kind of shady to me. Is there any way this is possible or legal?

Also, what was the price point on a new 1700 tiller with a 60?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

I've known a few people who have done that. Probably not legal, and probably more common than you think.

The glass will be much better in wind and rough water, having owned both I'll never go back to alum after owning glass. You will get a much drier and smoother ride out of the Tuffy, while I don't own a Tuffy my boat uses the same hull and have been able to stay drier and stay out longer than guys in 618 Rangers.

What year is the 1700? If it has the rear 52" livewell, it can be converted to an Esox Deep V from an Osprey model. The boat is rated at 60 tiller and 135 console.

It's a 2009 1700. I'm guessing I'll have to add the deep V casting deck (if possible) or something like a just encase to make a nice rear casting deck.

The rear of that rig fishes OK without a deck because the transom and livewell offer some foot room, but I'd go with a Just Encase; lighter than the Tuffy deck and doubles as superb lure storage.

since you're looking at a tiller, you do need to consider seat location for the driver. a seat base can be installed in the top of Esox/Tuffy deck extension...but i don't think you could mount one in the top of a Just EnCase box.

You could leave the seat where it is and build the Just Encase box to fit so just less than half the seat is over the top...add a slide and the seat slides away from the box when fishing or needing access.
