Just read an article by joe bucher that said never use a leader with your spinnerbaits. I never throw a lure without a leader. Do any of you guys use this method and do you not get any bite offs?

I wouldn't recommend it. Not only may you get bitten off on the strike, but you have to worry about the fight as well. Fish could roll and get the line caught in teeth/gills and slice it very easily. I really just don't see why you would target muskies and not use a leader.

I've heard/read that about Bucher and always think it's odd... I'm not sure if I have had it happen, but I think a big fish could possibly get an entire spinnerbait in it's mouth. I've also had fish roll or get the line at enough of an angle to get it in their mouth. I would be very nervous about no leader. I would also imagine a fluorocarbon leader would be less visible than 80# braided line, and a spinnerbait doesn't have much "action" to speak of, so not using a leader kind of baffles me.

Fluoro leaders can wrap around the spinnerbait arm. Its best to go with a straight solid wire leader on spinner baits. I would NOT recommend using no leader at all.

Maybe Bucher suggests no leader to keep weeds from collecting on the hardware when you're really bumping the cover. Don't know. Just a guess. I wouldn't do it not only because I would be worried about a bite off but I like being able to change lures when I want. Having to make a fresh knot all the time is easy but still takes time and would be a pain in the ... Unless you have a bunch of rod/reel combos (unlike me) where you could have a dedicated spinnerbait rod.

I believe Bucher changed his tune after having one eat the bait and bite off. He has been very adamant about not listening to his earlier advice about not using leaders with spinnerbaits, ie. the Slop Master.

I thought he said on his show a few years ago the best thing to do is use single-strand wire tired directly to the lure (no snap or split ring connecting leader to lure).

I happened to watch the SlopMaster 1 video over the weekend where he said just tie your line directly to the lure and that the wire of the lure would act as the leader. I've heard him recant that many times at seminars and on his show.

Wire tied directly would work fine!
