| I have done a little bit of musky fishing, but really want to get into to it this year. I am thinking about fishing Shabbona Lake in IL and then some lakes in southern wisconsin. ever since I had a follow up and a break off fishing on Leech Lake in MN i have been trying to get one. I really want to get my first one. Any suggestions for a rookie?

Location: Eagle River, WI | If you have never fished for muskies before, hire a good guide that's from the area that you want to fish. Explain to him that you have never fished for muskies before and that you would like to learn how. Don't try to catch a muskie when your with him, try to pick his brain and learn things like how to net a fish, do a figure eight, lure/spot selection, and boat control. You can learn more in one day with an experienced guide than you can in a whole summer of trial and error. |

There is one in my area that I was planning on joining. Meetings are close to 2 hours away though |

It takes over your whole life. Is expensive. Ruins some marriages, strenghtens others. You meet and get to know a lot of great people. Get to be best friends with other afflicted muskynuts. Get the thrill of your life every time someone in the boat catches one. Get to enjoy nature at it's absolute best while in your pursuit.
Alright it's late, I'll go to bed now with hopes of a musky dream.

Everyone was new to muskie fishing at one time,I've been at it for 36 years and still learning more every day.Be sure to ask questions here often,someone here will always give you an answer or put you in the right direction. Start putting aside cash,the muskie journey will cost you and once your hooked there is no turning back.

| As others have said, hire a guide. Choose wisely - most know their stuff pretty well, but not all of them are willing to teach. The best will educate you at your current level of skill/knowledge. With the right guide(s) you will leave the water a better angler than when you started the day.
Other ways to help catch muskies:
1. Get a good job
2. Don't get married
3. Don't have kids
You'll have plenty of money and plenty of time to chase muskies wherever and whenever you like!  |

Location: Columbus, Georgia | Ask the other guys on the board about the twenty (20) baits that will get you through the entire Musky season. Learn how to use each one well. This might be a good way to boost the learning curve and your confidence.
Then begin thinking of way to get a hold of A LOT OF MONEY.

Location: New Berlin,Wisconsin,53151 | I agree with cjrich. Search this site for the best 20 baits and you'll get by. But let me tell you about the addiction that you'll get yourself into.
1) Spending countless days and nights searching waters around your area and beyond,
2) Saying goodbye to your loveones for a good part of the year.
3) Maybe getting that 2nd job that you never really wanted.
4) Giving up that bass and panfish rod, your braided line just doesn't spool right on the ultralite set-up.
5) Being able to talk about fat girls at the bar and not get any dirty looks.
Boy I could go on for awhile here........
Enjoy your new life.....you'll love it.

I work at Bass Pro Shops, and am single with no kids. But then again my money right now is going to a truck/college tuition. |

yeah but my grandparents have a lake house about 15 mins away from there. |

As many said DO NOT go crazy like most of us (me included) do when they start musky fishing and buy 5 colors and 3 sizes of every lure that looks good. Shoot me a pm and I can recommend about 15 baits that will suffice when fishing Shabbona. Also, look up Duane Landmeier and/or Ron Fulk, I believe they both guide on Shabbona. They both are extremely knowledgeable and the money you spent for a day/few days fishing with them will literally save you 100's of hours of frustration.
