Just looking for some input in regards to what the best rod (weight, action, length, etc.) and reel combination is for large cranks, pounders, and burning 13's??? I'd like to have one combo that could handle all larger lures. Thanks for your input.

What kind of price range do you have to work with?

Daiwa Saltist 30LW with an 8' XH rod. I'm not as familiar with rods as I am with reels, but the Saltist 30 is the best dollar for dollar double 13 worthy reel out there. They only cost 180 dollars, and I absolutely love mine for big blades and pounders. As far as the rod goes, a Muskie Innovations Bulldawg Series rod only costs 150, so you'd be pretty close to staying under your target price. Okuma EVX's are great rods for the money. Around 120 I think. Shimano Compre is an option also. Not as nice, but only costs 110. For the action of the rod, I'll throw big rubbers with a rod rated to about 10 oz. Some guys like a heavier rod, but that's what I like to use. Hope I helped.

The XXH 9' Tackle Industries telescoping will fit that bill nice, I like the Salstst 30 to, I have the non level wind but to bulky for me on long hours so selling it and will try something a little less bulky.

I got a 9' xxh TI this winter for the heavy stuff. Really like the rod, could see using it for ripping big cranks as well as the pounders I bought it for. Also got a Saltist 20 levelwind for my main rod, haven't used it yet but feels solid and have no reason to doubt that it'll do the job. Thinking the line pickup will be good for jerkbaits and it's not too big to palm comfortably for me.

If you had a large budget, I'd say go custom for your rod. With your budget, it would be hard to bear a TI rod. I finally had the chance to get my hands on them at the Butler show and I was impressed. If I didn't build my own, I would have one!

What is the weight of the Okuma 86xxh (not lure weight but weight of the rod)?
And is the TI XXH still a good rod for "lighter" sfuff like the 11" Curly?

i think an Okuma or Tackle industries XXH rod at 8'6" would work for you. At $120 for either rod it would leave you some cash to get a good reel for the job. I would suggest a Calcutta TE for about $350 but if that is out of your price range you could look at the SC AC300 reel for the job at $229. I have this setup on both my TI and Okuma rods for large rubber and crank baits. The only thing i have done different is switch to the Toro Winch reel when pulling large blades. The only problem there is the lower gear ratio doesn't work as well when i throw larger rubber then i switch back or pull out the other rod.

Do you guys keep the power handle on your Saltist or are you switching to a regular style handle??

I have a power handle on mine but think I would like the paddle better since I run that on all my other reels including my blade reel.

Okuma telescopic 8'6" XXH is what I use. Great rod at a great price with a great warranty by folks who have been in the business for a very long time, and will be into the future.

I would definitely recommend the Okuma 8'6" or 9'3" in the XXH model if you want to be able to throw the monster rubber.

well all i can say is get the TI mega rod and put a saltist 40 hs on there and you will love it for big baits, that reel is killer for ripping pounders and also it will burn any large crank and blade you can come up with...bill

My pounder rod is a Reaction Strike Bull Dawg Series 9 footer with a Saltist 20 lw.
I picked up the rod for $70 shipped to my door off from ebay. But I am definately considering picking up a Tackle Industries Rod.
This setup with either rod should keep you under $300

Under $300: TI 9' XXH and a Saltist 20LW. For me the Saltist 40 is just TOO big and the 20 is enough reel for any bait.
Unlimited price: 9'6" Predator XXH and a Calcutta 700TE or a Trinidad 16n if you don't mind the non levelwind
