So winter is giving way to warmer weather finally down here in the land of lincoln, and it got me out to the garage for some Hook Sharpening and what not. I was tired of using the file deal so got an idea to try out the dremel tool. Any of you guys ever use this to sharpen your hooks? It worked like a charm. I put surgical edges on about 100 baits today before my fingers were cashed and my eyes were bugging out of my head but it worked awesome. So if any of you Muskie Heads are thinking up a better way to sharpen those hooks this winter try the dremel or something similar it worked great.

I thought about sharpenning yesterday......but I wanted to save it for a rainy day! I did take out my baits and just look at them though!

I have used the Dremel. It kicks a$$ for sharpening. Ieven have a reacharagble one that I take on the boat. I use a grinding bit or an emory round band. You do need to be carefull with it as you can mess up a hook if you overgrind one side (lesson learned from personal experience).

The dremel came with various attachments and the bit that worked the best was the tapered stone type. After about 50 baits the stone began to wear down a bit, but that actually made it easier to sharpen the hooks. New tips are like 3 or 4 bucks so I'm probably going to stop by the store and pick up a few for the rest of the baits.
Mojo how long does the battery last on the rechargable? I got one of the corded versions.

After seeing this thread last night I though I'd give it a try. I tried a couple different tips before finding one that worked and I've got to admit, it did an awesome job in much less time than it takes me to file them. Good tip.

I'd recommend trying a spare hook on the side first before butchering a hook on a lure though.

I am not sure how many minutes the rechargable lasts. I can say I charge it when I ever I charge my trolling motor batteries and I do not recall it ever running out. I am fairly fanatical about sharp hooks so it gets some heavy use. I really like it for hooks that are 5/0 and bigger. It makes doing the 8/0's I have on many big baits a helluva lot quicker than a file.

Cool, good point. I passed on the smaller thin diameter hooks and just used the file to hit those up. I really liked using it on the 4x hooks, it also worked real well at sharpening the barb side to a knife like edge. Kind of like a broadhead.

One tip that I found is that if you hold the hook with a vise grips, even when using a file, it really helps out in hand fatigue.

I've had good luck with the chainsaw sharpening stone. I've heard the aluminum oxide bit was good also.

I used the flat stone that looks like a mini grinding wheel. Then just touch the plane you you are trying to sharpen against the flat side of the wheel.

Like this... seemed to work pretty well.

This works exceedingly well, I'm now officially frightened of a few of my baits.

Chasintails, Martin, or Marsh - I know CT said he was able to put a knife-like edge on the barb side. Did you two do that also, like Gelb showed in MHM a couple issues ago? If so, my question is on many of my hooks, on the barb side the hook is fairly braod on that side between the point and the barb. Did you remove a fair amount of that material to create the knife edge? Thanks

Sometimes I find that on an extra broad hook a four sided pyramid shaped point seems to fit the bill better, it sounds like that's what you are looking at.

Exactly right. I first saw the MH article and got the idea but Tom drove the point even further at the Chicago show. When he talks I listen.
