i have boated some nice girls trolling open water , approx 40 -100ft depth, trolling baits in the 4-10 ft line

i have not figuered out when is a good time to hit open water except when i am getting no attention from the "prime" areas.

was wondering how many people work this no-mans land and why??
are you trolling or do you cast it?? also what are you keying on..

i read in past issues of MH talking about deep transitions are structures even though the fish might be 30 -50 ft above it,
in my case this is complete open water
i normally boat only 2-4 fish /yr but all are 45in +

kind of sounds like that is why you are only catching 2-4 fish a yr. Generally when people troll open water no mans land in deep water is because they have reason to believe there is suspended forage out there wether it is tuliibee or whitefish, shad ect. sometimes you will see them breaking the surface and no other times you pick the big mass of baitfish on your sonar!

There are ALWAYS fish in open water. Cisco/whitefish/trout type lakes you can get fish from opener to close out in the abyss. Early in the year can be a bonanza simply due to the fish haven't moved down in the water column yet, and a great time to get into the suspended thing.

On perch/sucker based lakes I usually don't do much suspended until afetr the bass/crappies have spawned. Then that time until the weeds really set up (say early to mid July) these lakes have a good part of the fish population out suspended. Not only do you have those that typically suspend in the lake (I feel some lakes have some fish that always suspend) but also the weed fish that don't have weeds to hide in yet. Once the weeds set up a portion of the population then move back shallow and thus less of a population out deep. However, those shallower dwelling fish will move back and forth to the deep water so you can still contact them deep.

Quite frankly the only time I don't care to fish suspended is a cloudy, cold front type of day. Generally the suspended fishing for me at this time has been poor (there have been exceptions) as the fish either go really deep in the water column, or slide up onto stucture and hug it. I generally go down after them before I head shallow.

Just a quick overview. I strictly cast suspended, and am also on smaller bodies of water usually under 1500 acres.
