My new Okuma 9'3" telescoping rod got stuck in the extended position this fall and I can't get it to collapse again. Anyone have any techniques to get it unstuck?

Sounds a little odd but try original Coke. Put just a little on the joint. Let it sit for about 2-3 minutes and then try to twist while you push the blank back into the handle and also try to tap the rod on the ground handle first. If it breaks free you will want to clean the rod blank of Coke to get the sugar/syrup off. This trick is an old Chemist trick to help release joints on organic glassware. Worked almost every time I tried it in the lab. Let me know if it works on rods!

The same thing happen to me last fall. I was able to collapse the rod by packing ice bags around the ferrel for about 2 hours. It contracted just enough for it to collapse with one hit of the rod butt on the floor.

mine was a different rod manufacturer but after the rod wouldn't telescope back in I continued fishing with it in the summer and it broke on a hook set at the top of the fore grip on a small 30" Bruce fish. Keep an eye on it.

If you're in the north country leave it outside for about a half hour.

You can use and arrow puller (if you bowhunt you know what this is) to get a better grip on the rod.

The ice trick should work. I usually just shove the rod handle in the freezer for a few minutes and then knock the rod butt against the ground straight up and down. That has always done the trick for me.

Hope that works.

Lightly spray the rod joint with WD-40, stand in corner overnight. Next AM, wipe away any excess WD and then a quick one motion push down will do it. I've done this many times for folks.

Just stuck a tica rod in the snowbank for a half hour or so... First smack butt first on the ground and it worked.
Nice trick, that rods been stuck in the extended position for 3 years.. Havent used it in a few, but cool that it shrunk back down.

Don't they say you should call your doctor immediately if that happens?

had it happen with tica and okumas, we just hold the rod and slam the butt as hard and firm as possable on the ground. it works good.

Do I have to stand in a corner overnight for this to work?... Seriously, lots of techniques to try, I'll let you know how it turns out. I'm thinking the super cold weather we were in last time out shrunk the rod, so cooling or heating the rod may work, although I had a two piece rod stick together once before and tried ice on the smaller end and heat on the larger end but couldn't get it out so I left it in the garage and when I tried it six months later during the summer it came right apart. Hopefully something will work although luckily my rod locker will fit a nine footer, just can't use it when I drive to fish with someone else as it won't fit in the cab of the truck. I'm picking another up in a couple weeks at the Indy Boat Sport and Travel show from Thornes probably anyway. Great rod.

Are you implying I haven't used something "in a few"......

Okay, I tried a few of the techniques offered here to fix the rod, ending with the one that most of you told me to try and which probably had the best chance of working.

Slamming it on the ground buttfirst...I did try that before posting the first time, so no go there, although I did try it again just to be sure.
Coca Cola....no go, tackle booty, I'll remember that for organic glassware.
WD-40 and standing in a corner didn't work, although I didn't stand in the corner for the full night, I admit.
Freezing the rod..(I used the pile of snow technique). Worked just fine after about fifteen minutes in the snow so thanks for the tips. Figured with so many similar responses that the cold treatment would work, plus the guys at Thornes told me the same thing when I talked to them. Checked the rod, didn't see any cracks so looks like the rod is good.

thanks for the help guys.

Glad things worked out for you. Tie your line off to something solid and flex the rod hard. You'll know pretty quickly if there are any cracks or damage to the rod. I would recommend testing it this way instead of on a fish!
