I am wondering what your thoughts are on the 2 reels mentioned in the subject line.

I am looking for a reel to handle bigger lures and #10 blades and greater bucktails.
Looked at some older posting and seen alot of good info about the Saltist 30 and the 7000i HSN. But was also wondering about the 7000i lower gear ratio reel.

So my question is if money was a issue would you buy the 7000i over the 30 or would you save up and buy the Saltist.

Please let me know your thoughts on what reel you would buy and a brief answer why.

The Saltist 30 runs about $150 to $175 and I can find the 7000i for as low as $104 including shipping. So please give me your opions on both reels

Thanks
Mike

Saltist hands down. It has held up for me over 2 heavy years of casting big bucktails with no problems. It will retrieve much faster.

I have both and find that I use my 7000 more often. The saltist is a great reel but I find that reeling that for an hour or however long vs a 7000, I'm far more fatigued. If I were buying one I would by the 7000.

i have both and they are not even in the same league when it comes to DB#10. saltist hands down. the 7000i is a good reel but doesn't even come close to having the torque and speed of a saltist.

both will break on you, saltist will reel in blades faster but the 7000 is perfect for night fishing.

You get what you pay for.... But if your on a budget the 7000i will work.

I personally would go with the Saltist without a doubt. Yes both will break down BUT the 7000i will break down sooner and more often. I have a Saltist 20LW and 30LW and a 7000 HSN (gold and black) all three are broken down right now, but the 7000 went down in july and the saltist took me to the end of november.

Keep in mind the Saltist 20LW and 30 LW are essentially the same reel only difference is the spool on the the 30 is wider upping the line capacity and the 20LW will typically run 10-15 bones cheaper.

If you can get used to a non levelwind, the moderately priced Saltist 30TH (narrow/tall spool with super speed) is a good solid reel. Took me a better part of the season but now I actually like it and definitely has it benefits, not just speed but nice easier cranking too.

So, what breaks on these reels? Do the drive gears just wear out or is something else going on? Are the reels cleaned and lubed properly?

I use ABU reels and rarely have to fix them. But then I keep them clean and lubed and break them down a few times during the year. Of course, parts do wear out in time and are readily available.

Just curious what actually breaks.

It's nice having the option to burn 10s over weeds or burn and turn into an 8 with a hot fish. Saltist hands down. Less working parts and simplistic drag makes for less maintenance and breakdowns. Take out the level wind and even less to go wrong!!!
