Now that the Muskie season is closed, football is drawing to a close, and the lakes are iced over, what do you all do for activities?

I help coach my oldest daughter's basketball team and am trying to catch up on the honey-do list.

Anyone care to share what you all do at this time of year?

I work a lot to save money for muskie season. I spend a lot of time here talking about muskie fishing. And then around the end of March I start to panic because all my gear is still in a giant pile in the basement in various states of disrepair. That ususally takes a month or so to sort out, and by then it's time to start fishing!

Help coach the kids for wrestling, which ends up sitting in a gym each weekend until about the end of February. It is fun though and I enjoy it. A little ice fishing here and there. And possibly a trip up to the cabin to check things out, look for sheds, and see where the deer have been or haven't been. Plus with work the winter goes by pretty quick. Still waiting for open water (usually mid March) for th walleye runs on the fox just to get the itch out and take the boys to catch some fish.

This year I am looking for a new job, as I was laid off a couple weeks ago. 2 interviews so far, and 2 more on Monday. Go to the Y, and try to drop some pounds, I need to get in the boat, and work on fixing the floor. Dream about warm weather.

Definately spend more Saturdays at the workplace than during the summer. Spend some evenings down in the man-cave with my guitars, writing/recording.

Ya Steve, I did the same thing. Had the TV in the shanty while icefishing. The best of both worlds watching the Packers beating the Bears and yelling "Tip-up"!

Guitar, grouse hunting, rabbit hunting, trapping. My favorite thing in the world was January quail hunting, but the bobwhite is more or less extinct due to America's love affair with overpopulation and development.

I love to trout fish this time of year. Usually the streams around here aren't frozen for long periods of time and I can get out once and awhile- not this year. Too cold! I bide my time building custom rods and lures and dreaming of long summer float trips on the river...

Weak! Most bucks are still holding around here, although I have some trail footage of a half-rack and one missing both sides. Just yesterday at lunch I drove past an area I can always see deer from the road and saw one big bodied buck with soda can bloody bases - still fresh, bleeding and dripping. Wish I didn't work in an office sometimes so I wouldn't worry about hopping out of the car and walking in with my dress shoes on, lol.

I used to shed hunt, almost everyday.
Now I live in Florida, in the winter. I golf twice a week, and bass fish once or twice a week.
I go up to Vermilion, on May 15, and stay till October 1st.
I'm originally from the Chicago area, but retired from law enforcement, almost two years ago.

Here in Buffalo, NY we make use of the snow by making snowmen carrying giant muskies:

In Virginia we chase fat chicks all winter. Paint lures and run over rocks in jet boats. I've found way too many rocks this winter.

fsf,
What do you fish out of? I was there yesterday afternoon as well. We had 7-8 fish up with no takers, and watched a bass fisherman catch a 49"er and a striper guy catch a 46"er on a skipjack. The 49" was dragged up on the bank and laid in the grass so the guy could get out his camera for a photo. It was out of the water for at least 5-6 minutes. The guy was then surprised when the fish didn't swim right off.

Fishing muskies in the winter is great, but I'd trade it for fishing MN or WS all summer in a heartbeat. Of course, it was 56* today and went hiking with the wife and dogs, and that's pretty nice too.

Sounds like a lot of activity on Friday. I like that fish Mullheads got. I never tell those northern guys I'd rather fish up there all summer, though true, it goes to their heads, and ...have you seen the size heads they have already??

P.S. I'm waiting for some northern wussy to start a thread about how to deal with "snowshovelshoulder".
