Location: VA | I've seen a few underwater clips here and there, in them, when lures are paused you see the weight of the leader and leader materials drop, and the leader falls in front of the lure being paused on the pause.
I'm sure its not a "issue" as hundreds + are caught every year this way, I'm just wondering if someone has thought up or came up with a leader that doesn't fall on the pause. One that would stay neutral would really add a nicer look to the lure presentation on the pause in my opinion.
I guess you could leave off the swivel (this seems to be where a lot of the weight is) with "non spinnning" lures or maybe even do a leader to line connection of some type? Longer leaders may help also...anyone have a video with a 2.5-3ft leader underwater?

| This is especially true with heavy wire leaders, and 7 strand to a point. Even using Flourocarbon, which is supposed to be neutrally bouyant, you still have the weight of the snap and the swivel. I've noticed that it's much more of an issue with smaller lures, most notably small jerkbaits and gliders.
One thing you can do is to eliminate the use of snaps and just use a quality split ring. I've also experimented with using about a 36" flurocarbon leader tied directly to your braid using a double uni knot. A lot of guys do that, and I suppose on pressured/clear waters that's probably a safe bet. But personally, I can't stand the feeling and the noise of the knot going through your guides. That is, however, the best way in my opinion to get the best action out of lures where you don't want to weight of the leader pulling the nose of the bait down. The swivel really doesn't do much except prevent line twist. I've never found that to be a problem unless you get a bait that's fouled and just spins around and around on the retrieve. That said, tying flouro to braid does make me nervous. But guys who catch a lot more fish than me do it sucessfully. That's got to count for something. | |
