I don't know why this gets brought up every year. All it does it get people riled up about something they really have no power to change. I understand that people want to protect their fisheries, but at what cost should we do this? Personally, if we were to ratify or change part of our treaty it would be a major set back to everything that we have strived for in our relationship with Native Americans. As much as we may want to, we can just go an alter a treaty. Just my two cents.

Hiya,

First of all, this does not pertain to Native American Spearing...It pertains to allowing Minnesota residents who purchase a license to darkhouse spear the ability to spear a northern pike of any size, regardless of any protective slot limit that is already in effect on the lake.

I see this going nowhere...

Steve

I see it passing if everyone who is concerned with this doesn't email their reps and the chairs of the Natural Resources committee or provide feedback in some other way. My emails have already been sent, the first of many I'm sure, along with phone calls.

If I am reading this right...... they are asking for no restrictions in size at all.... anywhere? Really?

Correct, deceiver. Regulations in place to protect the pike and the entire fishery. But if you don't care about the fishery, you're free to ignore those regulations if you have a spear. May as well have another bill written where you can keep pike within the slot by angling if you're wearing a blue shirt. That would make about as much sense.

While spearing fish, is it possible to tell their size before you jab them? Honest question as I have no idea how it works.

With 100% certainty, no. But you can have a good idea. Kind of like hunting where you don't shoot if you don't know what you're shooting at, spearing is the same way. Know before you throw. See enough fish swim through that you catch (or spear) and you get pretty good at judging the size.

Yes Kevin it is possible to get an idea of the size of the fish. The MDAA promotes "know before you throw" all the time...except when they're trying to get these regulations removed.

Kevin look up northern spearing on YouTube. There's lots of videos you can watch.

Okay. Really knowing nothing about it, it seemed like it would be hard to what size, or even what type, of fish you're spearing.

Carry on.

Well, here in MI, I'll tell you what happens. An undersize fish is speared, and brought up the hole. Oops... it's too small. Well, can't keep it, or I'll get a ticket. So, it gets slid back down. Happens all the time.

The sturgeon spearers in WI use a decoy or an object lowered down the hole that is the legal length, so they can compare the fish before they let the spear go. I went a few years ago, rented a shack that was all set up, they had a piece of pvc pipe hanging down in the water that was the legal size.

I read that they may be targeting other lakes as well. It is possible that they are going state-wide, all lakes this time.

i harvest pike through the ice with shiners and tipups, but if spearing were legal here i'd do that too. i grew up dark-house spearing pike in minnesota and also love to musky fish ... it's just another harvest method guys. if the harvest is under control by the dnr then it's a sport no different than many others and it's legal in a managed fishery. the lake i spear had this going on many, many years prior to muskies being stocked in it.

sure there are a few bad apples but that applies to musky fishing too.

interesting to hear expert opinion about "not" being able to do this or that with zero experience over a hole though.

I really like the fact that the MDAA wants to handcuff the DNR. Let's take all their management tools away from them and just let politicians decide whats best for our natural resources.

What a joke. Shaun and Aaron what else have you heard about this? Does it really have a chance to go to far?

Johnny the problem is not the method of harvest but what is being harvested. Spearers willingly acknowledge that they're looking for bigger pike and don't want the hammer handles. As you know with muskies, large pike are scarce and need to be protected. Otherwise you get hammer handle lakes like we have in most every lake in the state.

Right now the DNR is trying to get a handle on the pike problems in this state but it's the spearing organization that is single handedly tying the hands of the DNR. The lake shore assn's want these slots, the anglers want more opportunity for large pike in the state, and the DNR wants to reduce the number of hammer handles so their walleye stocking efforts will be more effective. There's only one group that stands against these and they represent 1% of all angling licenses sold. What's sad is that about 1/2 of these people also want the slots the opportunity for large pike as well.

BTW Sled, I've got a lot of time looking down the hole. My father-in-law was a die hard spearer. After I started giving him the info on how important (and rare) big pike are to the ecosystem he's pretty much given up the spear and just angles for them now.

Foul, who knows with these guys but we're not going down without a fight.

I called and spoke with my representative and hope that everyone else does as well. I hope that we can find some friends of trophy pike and sound resource management in the legislature.

it would be interesting to hear and see honest and truthful descriptons of incidental pike catch and release tactics by musky fishermen over the years ... when pointing a finger at one group 4 get pointed back at you.

Omitting the whole spearing issue regulations are put in place for all sportsman to follow, not just for most to follow and allow a select few to target the protected species. Its not like spearers are so regulated that they don't have plenty of opportunities to enjoy their sport. Ya, crap happens during angling and fish don't always live. That's part of the game just like hunting and every other sport but thats not an excuse to open up the door and remove regulations.

Over the last 20 I'd bet they released the ones in the slot and thought it was cool to have the opportunity to catch pike over 20"...

What I don't understand is the logic behind desiring to take larger pike by spear. The sport of spearing is just another method of harvest, but I would think most people would know that the larger the fish, the less palatable they are as table fare. And...as many health agencies have shown through testing etc. that the larger fish are more harmful to eat...

I have done my share of Darkhouse spearing and it is a very fun and interesting way to attract, view and harvest fish. Part of the fun is designing and painting your own decoys, testing them out, tweaking them to work better, etc. I don't support removing slot limits, though. Gotta have bigger fish to produce littler fish that can grow up to be big fish...

If one wants a trophy pike by spear, I could understand that, although I would think the mount would look kinda funny with 4 - 5 holes through the skin behind it's head... But...to each their own. I would think that if one wants a trophy like that, they will have to work for it so that the fish is larger than the slot then...and knowing trophy pike are few and far between, that would be no easy feat. In many ways that would be no different than our length limits for keeping a legal muskie... The big concern I would have here is taking more than 1 in a calendar year.
