I'm in the market for a low profile baitcast reel to throw rattle traps and hollow belly swimbaits in the spring. I will also use it for pike. I'm not going to be throwing anything over an ounce on it, but still want something that will hold up to musky. Price range around $100.00 or so. Any suggestions?

I've been using a Shimano Castaic for the last few years or longer and this reel has never let me down. I love the dual thumbar and after using this real it takes me a while with my other reels to not look for that dual thumbar. It is priced higher than what you are asking but should be able to be bought used in around your budget.

As for a new reel in your price range or just over I would pick the Revo S from Abu Garcia. This reel in my opinion compares rather well for using to catch Pike with the Toro series many are using for Musky. 8 ball bearings plus a roller bearing.Carbon Matrix drag with 24lbs of drag power. Precision Duragear brass gears. Oversized main gear. Compare this reel to many offered by other manufacturers in this price range and you'll find this reel has way more features.

I don't see that reel in the new BPS catalogue but after looking the new BPS Enigma looks interesting with it's anti-backlash technology, 8 bearings and 12lbs of drag force.

Agree on the Nitro. Great reel for lighter baits.

I'll have to check out the nitro. There is a local fishing swap meet in the town next to me in a few weeks. I might see what I can find there. Thanks for the suggestions.

Shimano Cardif 300 size is a small, palmable, lower profile round reel that handles muskies well. $100

Too bad you need a low profile. A 4600c3 or c4 would be perfect IMO.

One thing about BPS reels. They are for the most part a copy of the Revo reels by Abu. Same with the Pflueger.

Almost every part will interchange on BPS reels with a Revo, and the Pro Qualifier will interchange every part.

I've been using the BPS Johnny Morris silver reels for Musky and Striped Bass for several years and really think they are the best bang for the buck. On sale for $119.00 most all the time.

See if you can find a Shimano Curado 300 DSV on Ebay. Since the new E series came out, there are a bunch of closeouts on the "old" DSV. The new 300E is not all that different than the DSV. It wasn't completely redesigned like the 200 size was. If I remember correctly there is a new line guide on the levelwind and another bearing somewhere, but it is the same body, gears and handle. Speaking of which, the 200E7 might work nice for the baits you've mentioned. The reel has plenty of drag and enough line capacity if you're using lighter braid. I put a 200E7 on a rod I built for smallies, and that reel is fantastic. I would love to tie into a muskie on that combo some day.
