Location: WV | I like to throw glide baits the most, though I started throwing more and more blade baits in the last year.
I'd like information on Figure 8's with these type baits.
For instance, my last good follow on a top water bait came from a slow 'Walk-the-Dog'; when I get to the boat and change to my 8 I did a medium speed - constant 8.
Any different ideas for when you bring in a crank bait or others? I'd be interested to hear. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | I 8 the same every time, regardless of bait. I do two 8's if I'm blind with no follow, and they're fast and only a foot or two deep, the second one faster than the first. If I've got a follow, as soon as I see it I speed up and then I let the fish tell me what it wants, but it'll most always involve speed, direction changes, depth changes and whatever else I can do to get a strike. But I 8 the same with the blades as I do rubber or cranks. But that's me. |

| Some baits just aren't conducive to catching fish on figure 8's... I still do them in hopes of getting a stupid one, but there just isn't much you can do with certain lures at boatside. |

| Go to this website at the bottom of the page and watch what Lee Tauchen does with WTD lures at boatside. It's the second video down, but it's worth watching all of them. I will say that what he does looks incredibly easy, but I still haven't perfected it after two seasons. He has changed his leader since the show/video.
"I now use about a 10" section of 130 lb fluorocarbon for my WTD leaders. On the lure end is simply a #5 Bucher split ring tied opposite of the split. On the other side instead of a swivel, is a welded solid ring (like the ring from a swivel). Swivels add too much weight and drag. I throw these on a dedicated 7' 6" MH rod."

Location: NorthCentral WI | I have had success working gliders up to the boat, then make them turn and twitch them along the side of the boat. Try to go 6' or so alongside the boat then turn the lure around and go back the other way. I leave 2-3' of line out and just twitch the bait, it's fairly easy to get good WTD action with rod movement. I caught one fish this way on a hellhound and have had a few other strikes from this technique. If you've seen a fish during the retrieve, I would keep this going back and forth along the boat for at least 30 seconds or so. I'm sort of a muskie noob but I HAVE caught fish doing this. IMO there is no reason you have to do an "8" with WTD baits. Crankbaits on the other hand, normal figure 8 or big oval.

Location: thunder bay | i try and hover the bait about 10 feet from the boat then if that dosen't work i will keep twiching it into the 8 and keep twiching but that is if the fish is not active but if the fish is i will just go right into the 8 with no twiching. i have boated fish in both ways alot of it is reading the fish to see what they want. |

Location: thunder bay | you can see me doing a sloppy twiching 8 in this video. you will see the fish was coming hard and i keep twiching in the 8 instead of the strait 8 because i found earlyer that day that they didn't want the strait 8 but the twiching one. if you look close you see i miss the fish in the 8

| Guys, I have a tail that Gene Seuring sent me to try just for Hellhounds. He calls it the 747. It's a forked tail that is molded to the treble hook. Adds a little more hang time and more glide to a hellhound. He sent me the "prototype' but should have them in production by now. This tail makes that glider have more aciton for the figure8. Just when you thought a Hellhound could not get any better. Got a 45 at the boat the first time we tied it on!
Smokey's tackle should have em by now.

Location: syracuse indiana | well , all i can say is yes . you can do nice and good figure 8's with long rods.. with gliders you can keep them moving in a gliding like motion by using the rod tip.. and the best trick i can say is to make sure that the the circles of the 8 MAKE THEM WIDE.. i see alot of guy's mess that up the most.. you need to learn to read the fish. if the fish is very green speed it up on the straightaway and slow it down on the WIDE turns.. but if the fish is kinda slow keep the bait doing the same.
now for gliders keep the rod tip close to the leader (about 4 inches) so you can work the bait still
crank baits (12 to 15 inches infront of leader) the reason for this is shorter lipped cranks wont dig as much as the deep cranks.. they will actually swing out on the turns(way out)
topwater blade baits.. pull them under the water . dont be afraid to and with the longer rods you can make the bait just touch the surface in the turns. this really triggers fish that are hot on the bait..as a note this does wonders on rubber baits as well
and the zig zag topwaters. you can do the same as the gliders and topwater blades.. you can take them under the water too and do the same

| For those who were fortunate to see Jim Saric's presentaion at the Chicago show Saturday morning, he actually spent a lot of time talking about figure eights and specifically about doing them with the gliders and top-waters where many guys choose a different alternative. With respect to the gliders, he said that most of us are now using the ones with the curly tails attached (I know I am) and that the tail continuing to move in the water during a normal figure eight is all you need to keep a fish interested. He stressed that he does absolutely nothing different with the glider than he does with a bucktail and with good effect. Up to now, I relied on many of the little goofy tricks that a lot of us do boatside with those baits, but I am not about to go against Saric's superior talent next season. I am going to give his suggestion a full season to prove right or wrong. Any time at all with that guy will lead you to belive he is going to be right about stuff. Marty Forman |

| Try making a square rather than an 8. Each time you change direction for the square gets the bait to react many times triggering a fish. |
