A friend of mine just got a GoPro HD Hero package w/ a 10' pole for filming. He took it out this past weekend to the snowmobile races and strapped it on the front of his buddy's sled during the race. All I can say is WOW! I was very impressed by the quality of the video that it captured. I tried the search and couldn't find much on the GoPro... anyways, I see they offer the HD Hero (< $259.99), an HD Hero 960 ($179.99) and a SD Hero 170 ($100). The only limitations of the 960 are: no 1080 recording, and 720@30fps rather than 60fps on the regular Hero. With a 32gb card, the 960 offers over 5 hours recording time @ 960p and 8 hours @ 720p.

Is the 60fps very noticable compared to 30fps?

Anyone with much experience on the GoPro models? Which model have you used and what did you like/dislike?

I am very interested too!! Does anyone have a example of a mounted camera in a boat on a pole and the footage it gives? I would really like to record complete fishingdays. Lot's of times situations occur that would be awsome to be recorded.

The GoPro is the first mini camera that I've actually held onto and seen video from and I really was surprised at how good it looked. I'm thinking the 960 model would be good enough. Would like to hear from people that have used it at least a couple trips out. My friend got the fishing package that comes with the pole and not sure if the waterproof case is included but he has that too. The underwater footage should be very cool with it too.

I got the GoPro head strap it works well you just have to find a good angle to not cut off a fish fighting.

For even better underwater footage, read here:

Theres also anexample before and after. Before the easy fix, the underwater footage is almost worthless IMO.

Edit: the new underwaterhousings supposed to have fixed the underwater focus problem, if your UW housing has a flat lens, you dont need to mod.

I used a gopro for a day to road race and was very impressed on the video footage from a race track. I wondered how the footage would look from a boat also.

Just got the GoPro Hero Wide. It's an AWESOME camera!! It's about the size of two 9v batteries and it comes with a TON of onboard optpions. It is VERY easy to use and the picture quality is very good, IF the lighting is sufficient. It is made for outdoor shooting so don't try to record in the dark!!
I've used it repeatedly for the past two weeks and I love it. It is what you think a POV camer should be. Simple, lightweight and effective.
It comes with the helmet mount ( great for caps ) as well as 3M mounts for different surfaces; mounting on your boat etc.
It also has a feature that allows it to take pictures every 2,5,10,20, 30 seconds until YOU tell it to stop. So all those guys who fish by themselves... mount the camera to your boat and shoot away for as long as you need.
I bought an extra battery and a few 16 GB memory cards ( You can buy 32 GB but they are expensive. You're better off buying a few 16 GB for what you get.) But I wish I had've ordered 3 batteries because they are custom made for the camera and you can't get them anywhere else.
The batteries last about 2.5 hrs but they can be easily charged in your boat IF you have a 12v outlet.
Anyway, Great camera, small and light with 5 mega pixels and a waterproof case that comes with the kit. I love it and I can't wait to use it this summer:)
Check out GOPRO on YouTube and you'll see...

The Go Pro cameras are perfect for use in the boat and in the field. Tough, shoot great video, and not horribly expensive. The main issue for those of us looking to shoot several hours of fishing is the battery time and fact the unit doesn't loop record. For the money, this is an excellent choice. Jimmy Lindner of Lindner Media told me they used these quite a bit on a couple projects this summer.

If you are looking for more of a production unit, look into the VIO line. They have a new HD unit coming out soon. Expensive, but worth every penny when it comes time to edit the video. The double A rechargeable batteries last 4 hours, and the loop record function allows me to tag a specific timeframe around an event which is then saved to the SDHC card. Only what you want recorded is saved.

Anyone know if the camera floats in the case? I know its waterproof to 180' but if I knock it over the side, is it going down?

Ok I cleaned up my google-fu and it appears to be a sinker..so take a pair of swimming trunks with you or make sure you don't knock it off the mount.

With a little ingenuity I'm sure a float could be attached to the case.

But how would you mount it on a pole then? What would be the optimal place in the boat and how high? Does anyone have some foutage of some musky action shot with a mounted camera?

Before investing in a camera and some spare accu's i would really like to see how it performs in musky fishing circomstances.

I know that Keyes outdoors uses it. But they have mounted it on the net handle, and around chest of Mike Keyes. A friend of mine uses his, on his hat, when fishing for halibut and I think the quality is nice

Some of this video was shot with a Go Pro Camera, Jeff and Taylor had them mounted on their front chest, also the camera was water proof.

This doesn't look to good. Is this the best one can acomplish? Or are there better ways? or perhaps better camera's?

Heres a clip filmed with the gopro hd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrz46npKT7c&feature=related
Some water droplets on the lens here and there, but I think the quality is pretty nice.

I used a GoPro Hero last year on my net while musky fishing and on the transom of an offshore boat in Australia. They do take really nice video and incredible still images. And on the 2 second shutter mode, they capture some pretty neat stuff.
We had three of them snapping and rolling from multiple angles. They worked pretty neat once we got them dialed. Couple of things I would recommend. Getting the anti-fog strips for them instead of the spray fog solution. And when using them in rough conditions, make sure you check them for condensation on the inside and water droplets on the outside. The auto focus on them is very sensitive, and even a miniscule drop will steal the focus of the shot.

does anyone use a polarized lense for the case? Every video i have seen just does not shoot in the water very well. I got one this year and really hope to get some great footage this season.
Stay tuned
