| i've decided to purchase a Calcutta for 2011 season
this will be 75% casting reel, and when the old gal joins me it will be her trolling reel
is the Ct400B good value?? is it a VERY dependable reel??
or should i bit the bullet and get the TE??

| personally I would get the TE. They are both great but the TE is a little beefier and will last longer IMHO. If you have the cash get the TE it will pay for itself in the long haul. |

| From what I've seen the 400B holds up about as well as the 400TE and is well worth the money. Considering they are $200 less...I'd get a 400B. |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | The 400B is a good reel, but if are going to cast alot of DCG10-13, the hottest bait for the last 4 years, save your $$$ and buy the 400TE. The TE has HEG gears, the gears in the TE are 30% bigger then the B, so the TE has alot more power then the B. The TE will last you a lifetime. |

| The 400 TE also comes in a left hand version 401 TE, so this could be a factor as the 400B is only Righty.....Personally I have fished both and I think They both have a very quiet clickers and really were not made for Trolling, But I would think the 400B would be your better choice (Put on a fighting Handle) and go for the less expencive reel it will give you years of good service........................... |

| i do believe your right about the "non level wind"
i will be casting 10's but not a whole lot
i tend to chuck glides/jerks, my post teen/pre retirement bod breaks down too quick on the 10's 
so i'm getting this right , there is not a whole lot of diff in the TE and the B
looks like i might be able to afford to get 2
i will be going south this feb, will be hitting Basspro in florida

| I have 2 calcutta te's for over 3 years now and they get used a ton.if you clean and grease them regularly they will last forever.personally they are worth every penny. |

The non-levelwind reel would be the 400S. CT400B and 400B are the same thing. |

| LJV = Lucanus Jig Version
Its a 400TE on Steoids. Has better gearing and is tough as anything out there. Its designed for pulling big fish off the ocean floor. Works great as a casting real and is worth the extra $$$ (IMHO). The only draw back is the reel can engage if the handle is not in the proper position while casting. If you pay anttention and get in a routine with the reel this is not an issue but something to be aware of.... |

This is what the 400 LJV has over the 400TE
1. S-A-RB rustproof Roller Bearing for saltwater
2. Cold Forged Aluminum Non-Handle Side Sideplates, the 400TE has Stamp Aluminum Side Plates
3.Machined Aluminum Spool, the 400TE is not Machined
4. Drilled Crossbar Frame
5.Non Casting Power Handle
6. $90.00 more then a 400TE and you have to replace the Handle with a Trinidad Power handle that is Balanced, retail $60.00 appox.
7. Same Main and Pinion gear as the TE !!!!!!!!
So buy yourself a 400TE and a Trindad Power handle, and save some $$$$
The frame is stronger on the LJV over the TE. but the inside of the reel is the same. |

| The LJV is way smoother than a TE with a power handle. Night and day differnce. If you order the handle for the TE make sure it's not a B handle as they are simular. The draw back to a LJV was stated in a earlier post, it can engage if the handle is not pointed in the proper position or some anglers hold the handle to stop engagement. The reel engages because the handle does not have a counter balance weight like a Trinidad or Tekota. I have tried to attach these handles on a LJV but they dont fit because of a more aggressive bend angle on the handle.
Pikemaster which handle have you got to work on the LJV??

1. bend the star drag arms in a little, take the star wheel is off the reel when you do this.
2. add a small washer over the drag star wheel so the handle will miss the drag star wheel or a little of both. Also have the Trinidad handle recessed about .05 to gain thead back you loss by the washer. see pic below
the only time it will hit is when you back off the drag all the way and most guys will lock down there drags and leave them.
I have Shimano ConQuests Reels and they are alot different then the TE or LJV, what I like about them is the pinion is S.STEEL. and talk about smooth.

| Thanks ill play around with the reel when i get back to the shop. How old and where do you find the conquest??? I remember you bringin up this reel in the spring and cannot find it in any of my catologues.

| I have fished the 400, the TE and last year the LJV.
Get the LJV. It is the Rock of Gibraltar. I wish I had all LJV's now. I am buying a second this spring because my son now likes using the LJV. Little $&%*.
