We just started trying our luck at airbrushing lures.....we are wondering what we need for a clearcoat, we are using createx water based paints, so we need the water based clear I think. Also, we are trying to make a few of our own lures to try, just thought it would be awesome to catch fish on something we made.....when doing this, how do we seal the wood, so that it doesn't soak up the paint? Also if you guys have suggestions about different paints or clears, or cleaning methods, please let us know. We are also looking for more paint and supplies along with some lures that still run good but are in need of repainting. Please let us know if you have anything. Thanks

Here's what I do.

After the lure is cut, routed etc, I dip the lure twice in sanding sealer, lightly sanding in between coats. Once this is done, I dip the lure in my bright white primer. After airbrushing, I apply a 2 part epoxy. You will find that many like Devcon, Etex (Envirotex) and some others. I use an Etex epoxy, but with uv inhibitors. It's more expensive, but it helps prevent "ambering" of the clearcoat over time.

I am sure you will get a lot of posts on this. There are a lot of very good bait makers on here. Good luck and I hope this helps.

What wood are you using?

Thanks,
Greg

For crankbaits I use either Cedar or Basswood. For gliders I use maple, lyptus, ash, oak or cherry.

Good luck,
Greg

ok, I checked out your website and your lures look great. My next question is....where do you get eyes for the lures?

Thanks. Here's a few places that you can get your eyes:

www.lurepartsonline.com
www.jannsnetcraft.com
www.mooreslures.com
www.muskyshop.com

I am buying some eyes in bulk from overseas that are absolutely the best I have ever seen. I can't wait to get them. It will be a few weeks yet....

Thanks,
Greg
