Hey, I've read somewhere on a forum and talked to a couple of guys who have said the new Trinidads are like 28% smaller, but I can't find that in "official" print anywhere on Shimano's site about their actual size.  Has anyone seen a 16N and can confirm that they are smaller?  I've got a 16N now, but if I can get one smaller that pulls the same line, I'd do it.  I just hate to drop nearly $500 and have it barely smaller, or not even smaller at all.  Anyone seen one and can confirm this?

I've got the new 16NA and can assure you they are significantly smaller and lighter than the predecessor 16N. If you had big hands like me, you could almost palm the reel. Almost. I'd love to have three more of these. My favorite reel by far for steady retrieve type baits. Beware the line you put on them though. This was a huge factor for me in getting maximum performance.

Thanks Brian. That's what I wanted to hear. I palm my gold 16N now, but my hand and wrist gets sore after 12 hrs, and it'd be worth it to me to have a 14-sized 16N. Would that be an accurate size comparison, or is it still a bit larger than the 14?

The new 16NA is the same size as the 14, the 16NA has the same line cap as the 14, the 16NA will hold 190yds of 80lb braid, the 16N holds 250yds of 80lb braid. SWEET REEL !!!!!!!!!!!!! My 16NA is on a 9'6" custom, This reel is night and day different then the old 16N, the 16NA will out cast and has more power then the old 16N and with the lighter spool will not backlash like the old 16N.

Excellent!  Good to hear as I ordered it last night.  Already got my 16N sold, so I'm glad to hear these early reports, as I was thrilled with my 16N's performance other than it's size.

I've been trying to find the weight of the new 16NA and just found it. Fishermans outlet is listing the weight at 14.5 oz. Can anyone verify that? Thats a major change than the old one that i believe were 19 oz.

No, the 16NA does not have a counterbalanced handle.

Why would it need to be counterbalanced?  Calcutta 400's, yes.  But Trinidad's don't need counterbalanced handles.

The left side plate is 2.6" in diameter on the new 16N.
The whole series has been seriously downsized, and with lighter and slightly smaller diameter spools are more fisherman friendly in terms of casting and retrieving.

Well that' just great. The same size as a Calcutta. Now I have to figure out where to get $480 from. I already have a couple of $100 committed for new lures and a Justencase. I also want to buy a new SC Legend Elite walleye rod and a HDS5 . That may be put on the backburner. So much to buy every year and so little money.

Thanks Bob and Larry. Looking at Bob's pic, it is significantly smaller, and it looks great. And by the way Bob, is that your boat with the Power Pole in your PB album? Not many of us around; I've got my second one in the garage ready to go on this winter. Love the PP!

mskyhntr- I'll post a pic as soon as mine gets here tomorrow or Monday, with the 14, 16N, 16NA and 400TE...

Also ck out the New Trinidad size 10A 38" Line pickup and is only 13.6oz !!!!!
It should hold about 120yds of 80lb braid, it's rated 210yds of 50# braid from Shimano.

Still looking for someone to verify the weight of the new 16NA. I know they redesigned it so it has a lower profile (which it does) but have they reduced the weight of this reel? Every site you look at shows the weight at NA (Not Available).

Larry,

Any chance at a lefty? There has to be a dozen guys on here alone that want them. Probably hard to justify, but boy we would appreciate it!

No line guide? No issue for baits that are putting constant pressure on the reel when retrieved, like bucktails. You'd be surprised how the line will, more or less, even disperse across the reel without any help from a levelwind.

If you're thinking about fishing jerkbaits with this reel, things get a little more dicey. Any loose line on the reel, often created when you pull or jerk a bait, can then play havoc on the next cast. Don't ask me how I know these things... For jerkbaits, I stick with TE's, but do use the Trini for baits like Dawg quite a bit, with (assuming use of the right line) only intermittent line trouble.

Here's a pic of the comparison amongst the reels.  It is smaller, but not as small as a 14.  Smaller, yes, but I don't know that it'd be worth selling your old 16N's to buy an A for the sake of size.

The biggest thing I noticed was the reduced weight overall...the other significant thing is the reduced spool weight makes casting so much easier re:backlashes. Less momentum=better control

Also the reel sits lower on the rod seat so it is not so top heavy like the old one.
