Hey guys,
I need a little help with selecting a fish finder under 400. Color would be preferred but it don't need to have navigation or chart capabilities. Looking to have this mounted on the bottom of the tolling motor. Trying to get the most bang for the buck for detail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've used the new Lowrance Elite-5 a little this year and I was really impressed. It's priced at $450 but if you can swing it I'd go this route. There is a $50.00 rebate on these units right now also.

Otherwise, the Lowrance 350 C is a great buy and a great unit.

Humminbird 586c. I have this unit up front on my boat, it's a great unit and comes in around $350, but you should be able to find it a bit cheaper in Gander/Cabelas/other stores as Humminbird is going with a different model line-up next year. Bigger screen than the 350c posted above & better resolution than the Mark 5 at a lower price, but the screen is 0.5" smaller than the mark 5.

<p>Oops, I meant elite-5 above, not mark-5. Also, apparently there's two different 586c's out there right now: the old 586c & a 586c HD. Both are the same price (349.99), but the HD has better resolution (640x480 vs. 320x240). I'd go with the HD, but you can probably get a better deal w/ the regular.

eBay! You can get some nice $600-$800 units for about $400 used if you look. Just make sure you buy form someone with high ratings and READ the description. Some units are sold AS-IS or may need a part or two. Make sure you buy a complete unit. Also Cabelas Bargain cave will have complete units on special. I got my iGPS 522 Lowrance for about $200 off retail from the Cave. Perfect unit.

I've done this in the past when I needed units asap and I've been lucky. However, the downfall to buying used or discontinued units is the lack of warranty or in many peoples case lately is companies not being able to work on discontinued units at all due to no longer being able to get parts for them. So before buying, make sure to take this into consideration.

Humminbird 386cHD. I have a Lowrance 334c but am not a big fan of the interface on the Elite-5. I also don't like the mount...just a personal preference.

I've considered an M68c. Compact GPS/Sonar with color screen for $399. I just wish it took map cards. Even my IfinderH2o takes the map cards.

I like that you can switch to full screen in GPS mode.

Here is another one. This one from Hummingbird. And it does take Navionics cards.
