| When it comes to musky fishing should there be two catagories for muskies. ! being caught casting and the other trolling?
It just appear that so many of the huge fish are caught troling I thought maybe the casters should be given their due. |

I don't see it as a lesser presentation at all as there is still much that goes into it that is not required when casting.
One technique does not require more skill over the other, each has their time and place. Being consistent on muskie waters requires a sound understanding of the fish including how and when they are feeding.
If you're an advocate of luck, then luck can be a factor in both cases. Its not illegal to be lucky....

| Any idiot can drag a few lures around the lake and luck into a big fish, just like any idiot can blindly fling baits along a weed edge. But if you think that's all there is to trolling, OR casting, you've obviously not done enough of either. |

| How about those Bass fishermen , some fish the slop some crank some jig , should there be different records for each catagory , each technique has it's place , but i agree the relative danger factor in trolling fast and not hitting shoals and not getting baits hung up is an art all in its own

| I did not mean to imply either was a lessor catagory. I Just feel trolling on bigger waters give a greater chance to get a record fish. I don't need to ask Tom Gelb if its easier,I rowtroll also.
When it comes to trophy deer hunting a buck is a buck yet they have seperate catagories for bow or gun! When you think of it from that point of view I think it has merit to have two catagories. |

| And I've been on lakes where casting gave you a much greater chance of catching a big fish then trolling would due to weeds, contours, etc.

I personally have never sat down while throwing Monster Medussas or Pounders for 8 to 10 hours straight, and I KNOW it's harder than dragging a lure around the lake. Trolling is lazy mans fishing imo, but still there should not be two catagories. I'll probably start trolling more when I'm too old to cast.

My goal as a muskie fishermen is to catch "trophy" fish using as many different techniques as possible.
Live bait, trolling and casting.
With casting you can even break it down further; topwaters, jigs, jerks etc.
Catching a trophy with as many different lure types and presentations is a challenge that keeps you learning.
If you think trolling is easy than try driving around all day in Oct/Nov. jerking a suick as you drive 3-4mph. It will keep you warm.

| It wont matter guys, the next state or world record fish will be caught by someone fishing walleyes.
IMO records caught while not targeting said fish should not count. Now how about we start a new set of books? LOL |

| I understand it's just a discussion but... Do you honestly think someone will EVER catch a muskie heavier than 69 lbs 11 oz.
Estimates of the McNair fish last year were close, around 65 lbs if I remember right. Then the MI State Record that was caught last year, only 50 lbs and that fish was ridiculously huge too.
And look at the pics of those fish next to the pics of Louie Spray's fish. Craziness.
First, the current World Record must be dethroned.

| agreed that the Spray fish wasn't 61.5x31.75 like the record book says and that would put the fish at 80lbs anyways. But I think that a 70lb Muskie is possible.. Every year the muskies caught in the fall are a little bigger and more common. A 58x31 is bound to sho her face somewhere. And when she does, I won't care who caught by what method, I just want to see the fish! |

| Fish the way you want to fish whether it be casting or trolling. Personally I much prefer to cast, to me trolling is boring. Sure I would welcome a 50" fish trolling I'd rather catch it casting. Should their be two catagories-what difference does it really make in your world? Get out and fish when you can and be happy with the results. |

Well the end of your post is ALMOST the right thing to say. My wife and I have caught hundreds of Muskies. over a hundred this year alone. W e get them Casting and when we get tired because we are old we troll. Then when we are rested up we cast again. Instead of wasting all that energy casting at less then optimum times trolling covers more water and enables the smart angler to contact more active fish. Ill sit down and have a sandwich and a coke while I troll an edge or check out a piece of structure. The smart troller uses trolling to find the best spots to cast. At my age casting entire lake shorelines is asking for 800 milligrams of Motrin.. So Lazy?? hardly. Smart is a better word. We use it all, every tactic, lure and season. This sport has so much variations why single one out and bash it? Its all good. Mike |

I'm not bashing trolling I just think it's BORING! I don't have time to eat a sandwich and a coke. I'm busy fishing. Yeah my shoulders hurt like hell after a long day, but as the old saying goes "no pain, no gain". Those fantastic follows keep me going. See many of those trolling? |

Location: Brainerd, MN 56401 | @ Kingfisher, we here in MN are only allowed one line per angler, not like your 2 per angler in MI. So when you and your wife are trolling with 4 lines behind your boat I'd say that doubles your chances of getting a fish to bite since you can give the fish different varieties of lures or colors. Secondly, your post pretty much proves my point. Casting IS harder on the body, without a doubt. How many out there trolling need to take a break because they are tired or sore. BTW, what else are you doing when you're trolling, playing Texas Hold 'em on your smart phone. Hahaha JK. Congats on your success.

That is an unfair question. He already clearly stated he is eating a sandwich and drinking a coke. Hard work that trolling, even harder when you multi task. |

| I agree with Knigfisher and a few others who say they like to catch them by any means possible. Every different method, lake, bait has its own challenges, and they all are exciting to me. Some are more exciting than others, for me its casting topwaters. I love it. But I also love trolling sometimes, and live bait sometimes, and jigging, etc. Just because you may or may not like one method doesn't make it any better/worse. Why hate on it, if you don't like it, don't do it! The goal of musky fishing isn't to make it as hard as possible, or maybe it is for some of you. This whole argument is completely ridiculous and immature IMO.

Casting bores me. I hate the water constantly dripping off the lures onto my hat, and it's too hard to have a decent conversation while constantly throwing and reeling. And really, isn't the camaraderie what's it all about?
The fish themselves are WAY overrated.

You are not using Snoop's lingo correctly. Shiznit would be the correct choice. I never feel like crap after catching Musky. My body may be sore but pain is only temporary, the memories last a lifetime. |

| As all of this has been said time and time again there shouldn't be anything else that needs saying, but...
In my opinion, trolling does take skill and a pretty serious knowledge of the lake, especially on places like LOTW, where one mistake means $$$ on your prop and lower unit. Not every lake is that complex, but then again if the lake has nothing but straight breaklines/weed beds, then the casting boat control isn't very difficult either. The thing that bothers me is that while the guy running the boat must be knowledgable and be working to stay on the fish when trolling, anyone else in the boat isn't doing too much other than watching the rod. At least with casting, everyone is actively participating in the effort to catch fish, besides the guy running the trolling motor. Trolling basically allows one guy to fish with multiple lines. Yes, each guy will reel in his "own" fish, but not exactly active participation in trying to catch them. If the law were to only allow one line per boat for motor trolling, then it's a different story entirely.
Obviously not every boat works this way, and many guys will work more as a team adjusting running depths, freeing snags, and even take turns and such, but more often than not, one guy runs the boat while the others snooze and wait for the clicker to go off.

| I'm kinda likin' that idea of a different world record for every lure type.......we could have a matrix of records.....trolling, casting, figuring 8'ing & not fishing for muskies across the top, then type of lure down the side...........think of how often the entries or top dog would change! And then we wouldn't have to stare at Loui Spray's name on top all the time! Ya gotta admit, it would generate some interest, wouldn't it?

| I 've been reluctant to ever post anything on this website, as a long time musky angler(and have fished for many species fresh and salt water ), I always thought that world records were to be looked up too and something that keeps us going and a referance point for how big your fish is comparatively . I think it will not matter the method used to catch the new world record, the important thing is to catch it legally and enjoy doing it. (NOT A HARD AND HARDER CATGOREY)I know that it will fall. All these ppl concerned with the world record and all of its lies, But the same ppl that say it a lie and never been caught JUST BECAUSE THESE TRUE GIANTS AREN'T SHOWING UP ON "EDITFIRST.COM" DOESNT MEAN TRUE MUSKY PURIST ARE NOT CATCH 59/60 + POUND FISH THERE JUST NOT STUPID ENUFF TO SHOW PICS AND TELL EVERYBODY WHAT IT WAS CAUGHT ON AND WHERE AND WHEN ....especially to the ppl that are done fishing when the snow flies or dont leave your lake becauase someone caught a big 1 there. you have no excuse to judge any sizes or weights. Ther are world record crappie to go chase see how close to that u can get.
sorry for wordy response.....BUT IF YOU WANT THE WORLD RECORD AND BE FAMOUS FOR BLOGGING TOO >GOOD LUCK!!!!!! |

| I seriously doubt that the people in communties with enonomies that rely on fishing tourism are going to go that far out of their way to keep a lid on how great the fishing is in their area. Fishing is what fills their resorts, and their restaurants, and their gas stations and tackle shops, and ultimately puts food on their tables.
If there were 50 - 60 pound fish being caught in those places? You would know. We ALL would know. |

| Willyeinstein , your remarks are what defines you , I have been lucky enough to boat acouple of these great fish that flirt with the top rankings , and i don't mind sharing the general area with fellow Muskie hunters , afterall is it not what the fishing community is all about , I enjoy watching the look on a fellow anglers face and know that i can influance the education of said person by teaching them the proper hold and release techniques , hopefully they will pass this on as it was passed to me by my father and Grandfather , by all means come on up to the StLawrence and try your luck , the hours i have personaly acrued this year is aproching 430 if you feel threatened that some other fellow angler is going to steal your glory then i pity you as you have missed the greatest part of fishing all together ,that is enjoying the resources that we the sportsman have fought so hard to develop and maintain , make your day take a kid or newbe fishing !!!! PS I am sure that Jim Saric , Pete Mania , and others that share their wealth of knowledge really appreciate being called stupid for sharing and educating anglers around the world |
