Hey Mike, This is a tough one to give just one answer to!, there's to many variables that have to be considered, but if I had to choose one for the amount of numbers and big fish I would have to say right before turn-over when they make that last move into shallower water to feed heavily. by the way Mike, I'm still sick about that 30lber that got off, well keep pluggin my friend.

MuskieMike
Here on the Cave we have 2 big fish times that we all like. The first comes when our daylight hours start to cut back and cool nights start to drop our water temps, this is when shad move into the shallow bays heavy and guess what follows behind them. This generally happens between Late August to mid September.
Next comes probably the best time October and November, seems like the big girls come out with the feed bag on. Water temps are between 58 to 68 degrees. Tony Grant kymuskie.com

I prefer June or September. Both months have one quality that I love, thats 65 degree water temps. Thats the temp that has been the most consitant with big fish in my boat from Pewaukee to Canada.

The fall Cold water periods are fine, but the days are more selective. You can nail them one day, and not the next or just kill them for 15 minutes during one part of day. Big fish yes, but not consistant.

Just my opinion,

I have had my biggest fish on the Fox Chain in May, Silver Lake in September and the Madison Chain in October and November.

On the Niagara River, the middle of November, under major storm conditions,30 mile per hour + winds, falling barometric pressure, water with a green tint, under the New Moon!Big One's go to predictable places then!

Mike for myself, every month is good.Definatly the fall the weight gain is there. But remember colder water, slower digestion.Fast a furious action is not the norm.

Developing eggs and some oilier or fatty food base contribute to the weight increase.Pre turnover or pre cooling depending on where you live send the fish to activly feed, but I am not sure if it is water temps, changing light condition or developping eggs,it most problably is a combination of all.
take care

It seems when ever I'm NOT fishing a tournament. Or Full moon within 2 hours after rise low pressure 60-65 degree water and storms nearby.....I could be calling in sick for days.
