I don't want to re-open the great debate of split rigs vs snap-locks on leaders. I personally use both, depending on the lure. My question for folks that use or make wire leaders is: do you attach your split rings and/or snaps directly to the leader? Or, do you use a welded ring on the leader, and attach the snap or split ring to that?

I want to make some of my own, and I've seen them both ways. I'm not sure what the advantages/disadvantages to each style would be.

Does it make a difference if it's a single or 7-strand leader?

Thanks!

I just attach the snap directly to the leader. I use a ball bearing swivel on the other end to prevent line twist.

174# wire is so cheap that I'll usually just cut the snap and swivel off as soon as they get kinked or bent and toss the wire.

i prefer the ones with a solid ring.

i've had times where the thin wire of the leader will slide itself into the gap of a split ring and start to work itself off.

On one end I attach a swivel to prevent the twist also. As for the other end I just leave the loop to hook the split ring to. Also if fishing with someone that wants a snap it can easily be added to that loop. As far as Lambeau having some split rings and the wire causing problems. I have seen it a few times but generally when it has happened to me it has been because the split ring itself has been opened many times (on and off the leader). I generally replace the split ring at that point and seems to cure the problem. Also I replace all the split rings on bait on the front eye to ones I feel comfortable with. I seen some that I wasn't too fond of and had the same problem Lambeau mentioned more often.
