Location: Palm Coast, FL | I caught this fish yesterday morning. From one side it looks like a normal fish. From the other side it looks like someone sprayed battery acid on it. The area that was affected is about 12"-18" long by 4"-5" wide. Anyone have a clue as to what may have caused this? Kinda looks like Nightmare on Elm Street Freddy's face.

Location: syracuse indiana | i dont know why either, but the jame's fish all seem to have problems, i have seen alot of fish that have cuts, scrapes rashes ect being caught on that lake.. i hope its not contagious...bill |

Here is the response I received from Jed:
Vince - here is the note I just got back from Dave Meuninck.
..."I will forward to my GLFHC colleagues. My guess is a bacterial infection that’s eating away the flesh causing the formation of the ulcers. I’ve seen similar cases here at the hatchery where a lesion forms at the base of a ventral fin that eventually opens up into a single large ulcer. Death eventually occurs when the spine and/or abdominal cavity is exposed. ADDL (Animal Disease and Diagnostic Lab at Purdue) said it was ulcerative dermatitis caused by a bacterium. Tough to say which one since the open sores easily become infected by secondary infections. If he catches another one, it would be ideal to put the fish on ice and get it to ADDL as soon as possible."

| Ewwww! that fish doesnt look good!
I caught one the other weekend in Wisconsin that looked like somebody took a scaler to it!

| ACK!!!! I'm not creeped out by much, not even snakes or dead things or excrement...
But THAT??! I'm sorry, but that fish would have been flying through the air as soon as I saw that. And I'd be tempted to scrub my hands with bleach and throw out everything that touched it. Hats off to you for actually photographing it and sending the picture to the DNR. You're a better man than I am!! |

Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | You guys sure this isn't some sort of nasty by-product of fish being laid on warm/hot boat carpet to be measured/handled? From the slime being wiped off a nasty infection could ensue. |

| Maybe possible but not probable. That'd have to be one deep infection. Never know though...

Location: Palm Coast, FL | I caught another one Saturday. It was not nearly as bad as the one above. I had no way of keeping the fish until Monday sincde the DNR office is closed on weekends. This one had similar spots but were not concentrated like the specimen above. |

I don't believe so or the DNR would have been more serious about this. They still would like to have a specimen to look at. If anyone is out in Indiana and catches something like this...please give me a call at 574-551-0214. |
