| Brother and I are heading up to Butternut this coming weekend for a little sucker dragging and walleye fishing. Anyone have anything good today about Butternut. I heard it is a good lake. We will deply a couple suckers when musky fishing and hope to catch a couple dinners worth of walleye.
Any baits work better up there than others. From what I read the lake appears to be mostly clear. Sticking to natural colors seems best My initial arsenal would include a walleye hellhound, nickel/gold bladed cowgirls, maybe a dag or two. Topwater seems like a waste of time. I would think we would troll a walleye Krave, Perch jointed depthraider, and maybe a salmo skinner as well.
Any tips or fall walleye spots would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I have only been out on Butternut a few times...I would not classify it as that clear, has a fair amount of stain. Actually, my best luck out there was definitely on bright stuff, all orange soft tail phantom was a big hit out there for me...
There might be some nice fish in there but it has generally been known as a numbers lake with smaller fish. In fact a year or two ago they yanked about a bunch of muskies and dragged them down to a lake in La Crosse to try and get some bigger fish in there cause most were maxing out in the upper 30's. It's not a bad lake to fish but there's some really good water in that area and I would stay mobile if you bring your own boat.

Location: Smith Creek | And trolling isn't legal. Bright dawgs and jerkbaits work well. Look for cribs to find walleye and bigger muskies. If there's any green weeds try them too. |

| I was up on butternut last weekend and did ok considering it was my first time out there. Boated a fat 36 and a nice looking 31 tiger (sorry no pics - was alone). Missed 2 on suckers-one where my line snapped and one missed the hooks-frustrating. The sucker fish I had were relating on greenest weeds at the mouths of bays 10-12 feet. The days were real blubirds - I caught both fish by casting tight to the weeds where there was a shade line from the trees. One came on a shallow invader in perch w/orange belly I customized and the other on a 10" suick I painted gold/orange belly. Water temps were nearing 60 each day w/all the sun. Most success came south of the narrows. Hope this helps - good luck

| Butternut is definately not a clear lake. It is stained. There are some nice fish in there yet but the majority of the action will be mid 30's fish up to the occasional 40...
Cribs are always good areas on Butternut as well as the weed edges. Concentrate on weeds in the narrows and all the deep water around them....Flashy colors have always worked best for me out there...I usually will position the boat in 12-14 fow with the suckers hanging at that depth....Dawgs, DDD's and jerkbaits are producing out there now....
I know of a couple mid 40's CPRd this week out there...

| what everyone is saying is good if the water temps are around 50 drag some suckers. the southern basin is your best bet. the Island the bays and the points
Baitcasting rubber, glides, and bucktails Don't know if they pulled the bouys yet
but if they did be careful around the narrows stay towards the eastern shore if your to far over towards the western shore you'll run into a rock pile.
there's a big boulder about 100 yds off the southwestern corner of the Island and there's a sandbar off the northeastern corner of the Island. I don't fish for eye's
but if you stop in at northern pines resort there food paper placemats have all the old cribs marked and all the new cribs are in 12 to 14 fow you shouls be able to find them on your electronics if your driving up on 13 and going thru phillips stop in at ross bait shop and talk to john he'll tell you whats working on the eyes and ski's
Like everyone said it's more of a numbers lake now but there's still some monster's in there last sept. we cpr'd a 48.5 and I saw her agian this past july she was on the same spot.
Good Luck!!!

| If last night was any indication of what a guy should be doing out there then I would be fishing extremely shallow and moving shallow dawgs really fast!!!!
Just sayin!!! |
