Location: Utah | Had these sent to me...some Anglers out fish'n for Bass and Perch...had an interesting encounter with a Tiger Muskie that found their stinger as a bait pod of tasty bass.
Here's the story that was sent along with the photos...
We went fishing in Pineview today and caught 19 bass and 14 perch. The

Location: Minnesota | I never considered keeping a bass, let alone a little 11 incher. Maybe it's not such a bad idea to drag a few small fish on a stringer from now on. |

Location: Utah | FYSA here's the requirements for Pineview, Utah on Bass sizes.
Pineview Reservoir, Weber County
• Limit 6 bass, only 1 bass may be over 12 inches.
• Limit 20 crappie.
• CLOSED to the possession of tiger muskie. All tiger muskie must be immediately released.
• Tiger muskie may not be taken by means of underwater spearfishing.
• Unlawful to use whole fish for bait. Cut baitfish must not be larger than one inch in any dimension and no more than one piece per hook.
• CLOSED inside buoys by spillway near the dam. |

The limit allows 6 fish, only one OVER 12". Obviously, the system is being managed to remove smaller bass and that's encouraged for a reason. I seriously believe several lakes in Wisconsin need to do the same for largemouth if they want good recruitment from walleyes and muskie. Tomahawk and the Chippewa Flowage, for example, have very poor walleye NR now, and the largemouth population has exploded...effect and cause, IMO. If I was allowed to take bass there under 12, I'd keep a limit every time I ice fish there.

So they kept some 11 inch bass, big deal. Harvest of bass on Pineview is EXTREMELY low (don't have exact numbers in front of me). The smallie fishing on Pineview is great. Lots of fish in all size classes, including many, many trophy fish. I'll likely have more dead smallies in the gill nets I am about to pull than the 4 in the picture. Simply because an angler decides to harvest fish within the limit set up by the UDWR doesn't make them backwards. |

The purpose of the thread was to show what had happened, not to be ridiculed by ignorant people who don't even know the regs in the area he was fishing. More and more of this every day...

| GREAT story and GREAT pix! That's hilarious!
I have two similar stories. Both of which happened on the same fishing trip...just three days apart from each other.
This was back in October of '03. Up north in Michigan fishing a lake I grew up on. We were on a week-long vacation fishing trip. Fishing for Nothern Pike specifically, but even taking some panfish for a end-of-the-week fish fry.
Early on in the week, we had set out on the lake and filled a wire basket full of perch and bluegills to take home to filet. No livewell in this 14' alum fishing boat we were fishing from at the time. Towards the end of the day, nearing that sundown/low light period, we moved into a weedy bay to fish for a few Northerns. Did quite well, had our fun, losing light, time to pull the basket in and head in for the hour long drive back to the cabin: the basket that was full of panfish, came up EMPTY!
Turtles in that bay took their sweet time eating through the wire mesh of that basket and had themselves a buffet. Big hole chewed in the side of the wire basket. Classic.
Three days later, we move into this same area of the lake, same bay, again to fish for Northern but this time to find a few to put on the stringer to filet to desperately help out our fish count for that pending end-of-the-week fish fry since we lost a good portion of our panfish three days prior to the turtles.
Again...having great luck with the Northern, a few on the Stringer hanging over the side of the boat. Lowlight/sundown period quickly approaching, but also with a wicked cold front bringing a storm down on top of us that was blowing off of Lake Michigan in a BIG hurry. This lake we were fishing was merely just five miles inland from Lake Michigan. It was time to QUICKLY pack things up and get off the lake in a big hurry...well...as big of a hurry as a 'lil 15hp outboard could push a 14' alum fishing boat with two people across an 8 mile stretch of lake. LOL!
In the haste of getting things stowed in the boat and starting to get nervous with the amount of lightning starting to pop very close by, I fired up the 15 hp motor, threw it in forward gear and proceeded to hear the most gawd-aweful crucnhing and munching sound and the motor shook and vibrated violently on the back of the boat! Scared the living heck out of me! Confused as to what was going on...it didn't take long for me to realize what I had just done as I turned around to see shards of fish and shards of metal stringer being thrown about the back of the boat and the scales on the surface of the water. Blender mode. We had just ground up our Northerns on that stringer, as well as that stringer! LMAO!
Again, we leave that bay, empty handed after our fruitful labors of a days catch were not to be...
We still crack up laughing about that to this day!

| Based on the stringer, I wouldn't worry about fish being spooked by your wire leader.

Hey Mike...long time no see...hopefully we'll see ya on Pineview soon or on the hard deck. Glad the Bass are doing fine...we've gotten some nice size LMB and SMB that have eaten Musky lures...truly amazing...but we just let the Bass go no matter the size...bet it was a nice day on the View...someday the "W" word will be a distant past... |
