I am looking into a trip to Lake of the Woods next year and was wondering what is the most productive areas to catch muskies. How is the fishing around Sabaskong Bay? I have never been there before and was looking for some lodging suggestions also. Would like a clean, affordable and family friendly resort. Thanks for any suggestions and help.

Great area with lots of options. Give Mike at Red Wing Lodge a call. Couldnt be nicer people and a great place to stay.

Another option is Mylie's Place. I just got back from a 4 day stay and Justin runs a very nice camp. I believe all cabins have been remodeled in the last couple years. In addition to it being a nice place. They support Operation Muskie by donating a week each of the last two auctions. Give their web site a look.

This year we went up to Sabaskong for the first time and we stayed at Helliar's Resort out of Nestor Falls. They treated us well and the rates are great.

I have been on a few different parts of the lake and I would personally recommend staying away from Nestor Falls, you can find better fishing and less overall boat traffic in other areas. Getting out on one of the island camps away from the towns makes for a better experience. I stayed at Spruce Island Camp last year which is basically right in the middle of the lake. Pressure was light, fish were plentiful and all in all was very affordable

Lots of options in the Sab Bay area: King Island Lodge, Sabaskong Bay Lodge, Duck Bay Lodge, Red Wing Lodge, Mylie's Place, Buena Vista Resort, Grassy Narrows Lodge (Miles Bay, northern part of Sabaskong), Obabikon Bay Lodge, New Moon Lodge, Tamarack Lodge, and TONS more. Ontariosunsetcountry.ca will have a heap of listings.

In my opinion, Sabaskong Bay gets less pressure than the NW Angle, judging by the number of ads placed in high profile magazines, reports, and the general publicity that area gets online and in print (though I will add I've never fished the NW Angle). The fishing on LOTW is great no matter where you are. You simply cannot go wrong.
