Double Split Rings?

Has anyone done this? I thought I read an article a few years ago about running double split rings on your crankbaits to reduce the leverage that a fish can get on the hooks. Heard that double rings can give better action to the bait also.

Thanks,

IMO your fishing line will do that alone. With that said, most musky leaders are tough to get onto smaller crankbaits and a ring is real nice on the nose for a quick change.

Double split rings on the lure attachment to the line or leader, or double split rings on the hooks?

The only lure I've ever purchased that had double split rings was a mag dawg not so long ago. I've never seen another one packaged like it though.

The wolverine split rings are great if the eyes are big enough. Many times the wolverines will restrict the free motion of the hooks.

SPRO split rings are as good as they come. They are a little darker in color and a little more expensive but IMO they are the best available. SPRO #6s are a good all around split ring.

I don't think miket620 is questioning the strength of split rings and I don't think he's talking about attaching two split rings to the baits hook eyelets for the hook to then attach to both split rings. I think what he's asking is one split ring attached to the bait's hook eyelet, then a second split ring attached to that first split ring (but not to the bait), then the hook attached to that second split ring, basically...creating chain links from the bait to the hook, to reduce the leverage the fish can get on the hooks/bait.

That is..if I'm understanding him correctly?

I guess that might make sense.

Like I said, one of the new shallow mag dawgs I bought at the end of last year had double split rings and both were through the eye hook and the lure eye.

Double rings acting as chain links I would think would cause more fouled hooks but still might not be a bad idea.

I have seen it on a few baits and do not like it personally. I do however run a split ring on ever bait and like the action that creates. Plus majority of the time I do not use snaps which is why the slpit ring on the baits is needed. It takes a little getting use to but once you get the hang of it, it is almost no difference in time changing baits.

This used to be more common before quality split rings were easily available. I collect older musky baits and have seen alot of number 4's run inside of 6's for example. Again, I think this was done as a strength issue back 20 years or so when there wasnt the availability of rings we have now.
but, i'm no genius, just my opinion
