No, I don't want to start a discussion on the Whoopi Goldberg movie....I've been purging the tackle boxes of the non-producers and noticed that for the 3 tackle boxes that I have full or nearly full I have but one purple bait, and that isn't even totally purple, more like a purple tail with a gold blade (bucktail). So I started thinking (gotta do it once a week), "Am I missing something?"....but WHEN and in WHAT conditions do I throw purple? Yes, I am looking for an excuse to buy more baits....2 purple dawgs that are itching to get bought if I can just get some justification!

No experience with purple per se, but I do have a pair of monstrous gaudy spinnerbaits - orangle blades, fuscia tails with pink hackles. UUUUGLY!!!
BUT, I have now boated 3 muskies over 40" on these this season. So clearly they work. I have had best success with them in the period right around sunrise (low light).

Pure purple is at the extreme bottom end of the spectrum (ROYGBIV) and is therefore NOT a colour pattern that is favourable to a muskie or pike's vision. I would suspect that to them, purple is likely another shade of black. So, if black would work, purple should too. The only real plus to the purple would be if you have some kind of contrast in the tail or on the bait. For example, a purple bucktail with pink or orange hackles might prove very interesting as the one accentuates the other... much like a perch pattern. (I have found that a black bucktail with white hackles is an awesome combination, yet few people use it.)

Somewhat of a meandering answer, but hope it helps. Give 'em a try!!!!

Purple and Pink are very much overlooked by muskie anglers. Lots of fish are boated on these unmanly colors by those who dare. In fact Monday in the attempt to throw something different in a highly pressured spot we went to pink and purple as 2 lure color choices, results 41.5 on a pink bucktail with 4 other follows, a purple Ghosttail had a awesome boatside attack that we didn't land.
At a Muskies Inc. seminar I gave in Rockford last year a couple told me about a unbelievable trip to Canada where fish ate pink or purple bucktails for the trip of a lifetime.
Something different sometimes pays off BIG.

Purple is an awesome color, is as good as black in my book. I have done well with chart/purple and gold/purple.

The vikings are purple, however I dont care too much for them. LOL

I'll have to agree w/ everyones opinion on pink. Three or four years ago I was up at my cabin w/ a friend on his first musky trip. John Gillespie was at the launch and we all started talking. He gave us a pink Lilytail to try and I'm thinking, "is he being nice or trying to be a wise guy giving us this pink thing." My friend, definately being the wise guy says he is going to use the pink lure all day. As we start out I tell him to make sure he does a figure 8 or two on each cast as the water is stained and follows are not always easy to see. He says okay. FIRST cast and he's screeming at me look at this huge fish. I look over and there is a mid 40's nose up to this pink thing he's throwing. Before I can say a word he stops the lure and starts kinda jigging it and the fish slowly sinks down out of sight. After a little shouting match he admits he has no idea what a figure 8 is. Why he didn't just ask I have no idea, but it probably cost him a very nice first ski. Later that day he caught two mid 30's still throwing the pink Lilytail. Since then that bait has been one of my go to baits.

Hey- geez!!!!! What the hey are you guy's doing?[:(] - giving away one of the best kept secret Muskie color's to the whole Muskie world [:knockout:] Now all those Muskies that are "purple virgin's" are going to get sore mouthed.[:((]

Sponge Bob- Can you believe this behavior? This is blasphemy to the "Muskie Secret Color Society" - I can't believe they did this on a public forum- I know it probably means a trip to the bayou's- but could you please, pleaseee put together one of your magical potion's and try to save these evil-doer's before they perish from self combustion. [:halo:]

I'm thinking about hitting Smokey's yard sale. Just might bring a sample of what is in my humble opinion, the hottest purple color pattern to ever be created- once you see this magnificant work of artistic magnificance you will be a devotee also. "all hail the glorious majesty of purple" It is appropriate to face toward Lake X while chanting this phrase.[:halo:]

As to the source of this astounding creation- I will be accepting bribe's of an appropriate nature- as I'm in desperate need of new candidates for a custom p@$ple paint job [:p] If you see a little "purple" Mazda MX-3 pull up- that's me![8)] Please don't rush the car-[:sun:] I decided to not bring the Esox Maniac water toy- With all the Muskie Fisherman coming to Smokey's I figure Pewaukee will probably be whipped to a froth by all the boats and the hot air blowing offshore from Smokey's[]

some of my good producers this year were pale metallic lila colored lures (sprayed them myself), with a orange belly, red throat and a gold + black back. It the waters I fish (clear water) this color turns silver. I also repainted a supershadrap this way and scored as well. Dark purple hasn't taken any fish yet.

Esox Maniac, those purple crankbaits were cool. A person my mom works with went to hayward in early june and they boated 35 musky in a week with a purple mepps with a silver blade.

I love purple worms for bass fishing so why not purple for musky fishing.

Capt Larry- I also love Stan's custom stuff- Got three w/ the "Durst Secret Color" -> Little Ernie [Durst Purple Daze]; Jake 6[Fire&Ice]; Jake 8 [Stump Knocker}. The Little Ernie already has some Canadian Muskie "fang marks". [] They're all three going to do a little swimmin' in Lac Courte Orielles this weekend.[:p] Maybe they'll encounter some Wisconsin Muskie fangs![:0]
