I caught a musky today in IL from the fox river. I just noticed from the picture that the fishes left side pelvic fin was completely gone, would this be something the DNR did? I am wondering because it's possible the fish washed down from the chain.

Well what did the DNR say???? The DNR should be the only ones that can legally clip a fin unless an individual or group asking for permission to do so. If that's the case, they should know. So contact the DNR with your inquiry.

alright, good idea, was just wondering if anyone knew.

The river fish go through a lot here, if she did come from the chain she had to drop several 10' dams, so it is possible she lost it during her 30 mile adventure down stream.

I've caught fish with parts of fins clipped off myself, in places where no DNR fin clipping has ever taken place. I think maybe there are a lot of guys doing this to see if they catch the same fish again??

Yes, I would say that is something the DNR did ... They did it to 400 Leech Lake strain fish on my home lake 10 years ago and I am still catching a fish here and there without a pelvic fin on the right side.

Doubtful it came off "naturally" and most likely something the DNR did. Also possible a fisherman did it to see if they are recapturing the same fish. I would hope it is something the DNR did. Anglers clipping fins is bush league.

Ok, my bet is DNR and that it was stocked on the Fox Chain 30 miles up stream. If anyone else had caught it on the river it would have most likely put on the stringer like everything else.

Call them up. They will know. Tell them where you caught it, size and what fin was clipped. They can likely tell you a little information about the fish which is kind of cool to know.

I have caught a couple of muskies with the fin clipped from the Fox river and I personal know someone who caught one that was tagged from the Fox Chain and was caught 3 years later in the Fox River! I believed it only grew 4 inces .
