Looking for input on Beckman Nets. What size hoop and bag (treated of course) are people happy with.

Have had mine a couple months now and wishing I had gotten a Fribil instead. Good net but hooks tangle in it bad.

Do you hooks get caught in the treated bag?

Yes it's the treated bag, ever fish in it so far has tangled. Never have that problem in the Frabils we run in our other boats...

I agree - very tangly and i also felt hoop flexed too much for my liking. I sold it and bought a stowmaster - way bigger and stronger hoop (yes it is tangly too). I have a smaller frabill and it is not tangly and the yoke is the easiest of the three to get locked in.

Agree with the comments above. Sold mine and got a Frabil Big Game. The fram and handle weren't too bad, other than you had to make sure to have the handle open before you needed it because it was round, the lock pin would slide through and not be aligned and the handle would come out of the yoke. The Frabil you can "shake" it open with one hand and are good to go. The Beckman isn't bad, but the Frabil is better for my needs IMO.

the fin savers not bad, very light also which makes it easy to net a fish solo.I need to order a new one since mine is getting older and will probably go with a mag fin saver xd or maybe a big game.

I must admit I have an older bag that is knotted. Is there a way to coat this net to protect a potential lunge or will I have to splurge for a new bag?

I have used a Beckman for a number of years and about three years ago I replaced the original knotted bag with the newer fin saver. Love it. It's light to use when alone in the boat. Hook tangles never take more than a couple of minutes to sort out. I have fished with numerous guys who have the Frabill and have noticed that the fish always are heavily marked from the net. Never happens with the Beckman.

Not what I have seen. Maybe they are using an old knotted net bag? The Frabill Big Game doesn't 'heavily' mark the fish, and in my observations, doesn't 'mark' the fish up at all.

I've had my Beckman Magnum XD Fin Saver for years! I love it! I do get some tangles but, like mentioned above only takes a few minutes to get out. Otherwise I’ve never had a problem.

Are the fins and tails getting split in the beckman fin savers even though the name is fin saver?? My powercatch seems to always tear them up but I am very pleased with my Frabill.

Alright so with all the talk on here about hooks getting tangled in the Beckman netting, I have come to the conclusion that I need to make a change. I think I cursed myself this season with tangled hooks and too much time spent undoing the mess, after saying I never had many problems with this net. So with that being said can I put a Frabill Net on a Beckman frame? I was thinking of putting the Big Kahuna net on? Anyone else have any experience?

One thing I've seen is the netting pulling apart on the big Beckmans. I'm not sure when it happens, but I suspect it's when a fish is in the bag thrashing around with a lure in its mouth. I've had it happen on my last two Beckmans. As long as you watch for that happening and use some braid to mend it, it's not a big deal, but I have lost a couple smaller fish through the holes. The good thing about the Beckmans is they are super light making it a great net if you're fishing solo.

I do like the fact that they are light. I’m just tired of the hooks getting tangled in the netting.

I had a Beckman net that I used for 3 or 4 years and it was great in the begining. It was a treated bag with about a 1 inch hole knotless. It got worse as time went on. I should have replaced the bag sooner. I had a fish tangled in it so bad I had to take scissors to it to get the fish out! I replaced it over the spring with a 34x36 Fin saver pen net I do not get bad tangles anymore I get the fish out of the net quickly. I think the net is perfect for fish safety. The net has the really small holes which I think reduce fin splitting etc... However it is a lot harder to net a fish solo with this net than the other because the small holes create resistance when trying to net the fish. Maybe after a year or two I will get bad tangles and I will have to get a new bag. I didn't get a Frabill because I thought the wider holes on it would split fins and tangle hooks and the net is huge. I figured I'd have an even harder time netting fish solo with the Frabill. Maybe you just need a new bag. Just my thoughts.

I find that with the small holes the hooks get tangled up so bad when a fish rolls. I think with the bigger holes that problem will be eliminated?

No tangling if you don't put pressure on the fish. Will Schultz always taught me to pull the fish into the net. Don't scoop up the fish away from the boat and then pull the net back to the boat. When the netting surrounds the fish, it seems to drive them crazy. See the video here on how to keep a fish calm! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FHyVsyMBeM

No, that's not me. That's Will Schultz. When you're talking Will and muskies, there's no luck involved. He's a veteran fisherman with over 25yrs muskie experience.

Okay sorry Jim. Funny that you get one fish that doesn’t go nuts in the net and that’s the way to net fish. Hmm interesting!

Funny video and probably a poor example.
#1 Fish pretty well exhausted at boatside. Kind of late for netting I think, might as well do a water release, but....ok you want to net it, and since it is exhausted already, it won't do much in the net. And so, how many fish can you let lay there in the net with NO support for the net? The net is just lying on the edge of the boat, unsupported in any way. I have wide transoms and have already proved that even though they are wide, this is a bad idea.

To top this off the fish is not only a HUMPBACK, but it appears to be a starving humpback at that, no wonder the bugger was so docile, LOL.

All in all, I would probably redo this video with another fish. I understand the points being made but when I got a good look at the fish, I started laughing.
