Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Word is the bite yesterday and the day before was very tough for everyone; the Big V has been showing us the Pigs, but has been stingy on the takers. The MI Outing reportedly boated one yesterday and the MuskieFIRST folks boated one, but the front is through.. so we are hoping for better action!

We had 6 guys up there last week and ran into the same conditions (High winds Sunday/Monday and cold after that). Brutal. We only eaked out two fish. One was on a jackpot in 1 foot of water and the other was bait fish related bulldawg fish off the deep side of a reef. After the wind went through and the cold front settled down a couple of days, the fish started showing up again, but not many. It was very slow for us but I'm sure some fish will show up with your outing or MI's outing at VDL. Good luck and keep throwing...you never know when they will move.

Location: Maple Grove, MN | Seems the big V has been tough the last month. I was up there the first week in August and caught no Muskies all week. Others had some success with a few big fish being caught around the lake.
I have only been out for two short outings since getting back from the big V. In those two outings and just five hours total fishing time on Lake Minnetonka, I have caught three Muskies, had four others on briefly, and have seen a dozen other fish including a couple of big fish.
Not everyone is seeing fish on Minnetonka though. The Muskies can be very hard to find there and often aren't where one expects them. It still takes some planning and luck, especially with limited fishing time.
What I learned in the past month is this:
- A person will almost always do better on lakes one knows well. And it takes time to learn any lake.
- Any lake can turn on or off on a moments notice.
- Vermillion has great potential. It has a large fish size structure and a good population of fish. It is also very scenic.
- Minnetonka has great potential too, but it is also very busy to the point of being dangerous at times.
- On the big V, one watches out for rocks. On Minnetonka, one has to watch for the big boats that may run you over if you aren't careful. (Almost happened to me last night.)
- It is much quieter on Vermillion.
- No matter how skilled one is, if the fish don't want to bite, they won't. And it often doesn't matter which lake you're on either.
- It often doesn't take much skill to catch a Muskie if they want to bite.

| Spent Tuesday on the Big V for the very first time. I took my buddy and his boy out for about 5 hrs worth of fishing, the balance of the rest of the day was watersports. We hit peak time for fishing and had decent action I thought for never being on the lake before.
My buddies boy caught his first ever musky, a nice 48". My buddy caught a 36" pike and I was blanked. The biggest bummer was the camera took a drink so no pics of anything! Major bummed.
We only saw two other fish, but the boy catching his first musky was a definite highlight. I knew that spot was going to produce something, wind blowing between two islands and sure enough, there she be on the back side where the eddy formed.
She drilled a chartreuse Harasser. He never took the bait off after that! Probably wont for a while. LOL |

Last night was the first this week I didn't see any muskies. Thomas Allen moved a couple, TJ didn't see any, and I haven't seen anyone else today...everyone is on the water. Wind is gusting to 15 right now out of the west/northwest, a big improvement from the last couple days.

Last night was the first this week I didn't see any muskies.
Saw a few boats around fishing spots I wanted so I just moved on, plenty of room out there so no need to crowd anyone. We saw a couple boats trolling open water near some humps we were casting. I wonder if they had any luck. I was marking tons of bait over the open water.
We were almost within casting distance of Spring Bay resort when he caught that fish, so REALLY close.
The pannies would be fun, nothing like a good fish fry! |

It was literary howling out there, no fun controlling the boat. We went anyway, of course but everyone apparently had the same idea about the west side being protected...lots and lots of boats today where yesterday and the day before there were none.
We multi-specied it again, and have a fish fry ready to go for tomorrow.
E, as of 10:30 AM yesterday, the MI group had one 46".

I've fished the West End several times. It blows up very easily and is just as hard to handle as any other big water.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Gee, wind, I'm missing one of those three motors on my 16'10" Osprey. Didn't need bad weather gear, it was really windy, not storming. Cold front, to boot; it's supposed to get down to near 40 degrees tonight, it was 52 degrees on the water this evening which was perfect sweatshirt weather, and it was in the upper 80's a couple days ago.
Boat control was fine for me, held on schools of fish as they moved along in the cabbage/coontail mix in 6' and pounded on 'em.
We fished, and did so out in the wind. Caught a crap ton of nice gills, and watched at least 25 Muskie boats work through the area while we were there. The wind gusted a few times so strongly my hat was at risk, and I let out an involuntary, "GEEEEEZE". Still, I'm on Vermilion, and the next cast can be a trophy of whatever specie I'm fishing for, so one goes fishing!
Steak fry was stellar, more on that soon...right now I need to get out and toss a surface bait around.

Why would you want someone to go out in conditions that they or the people their with aren't comfortable in? Thats not only dangerous its not fun. Thats what musky fishing and the outdoors is suppose to be about. Enjoying your time out there on the water with your family and friends. That first post makes you sound like kind of a tool. I would have typed "dick" instead of tool but that would probably get this deleted.
Steve I enjoy the reports and have been in your shoes many a time with the wind and rain. Hell, last July in Canada with my wife and kids spent one day in the cabin and two days driving around Kenora. All because of weather conditions. I for one am impressed with an angler that can change on the fly. It appears like you're doing well on your flight. I wish I was there with you folks. |

Although there are places to fish when the wind is blowing on vermilion, many times it can be downright brutal going from one spot to another, or even if you are out of the waves, the wind can still make it hard to effectively fish the area. It gets tiresome once in a while when one has to continually be on the trolling motor adjusting for position (relative to the boat you are in)
If the wind is blowing hard enough, it is best to err on the side of caution than to try and be macho and get you or someone else in peril. All it takes is one wave...
Safety not only applies to when your fishing...it applies to travel as well, which in all honesty is probably the more important of the two.
Hopefully the wind will die down for the last two days and some fish come to the boat. Windy conditions are not fun... Some wind, fine.... Lots of wind....gets old...

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Spring Bay outdid themselves tonight with a top shelf job grilling steaks for the entire resort. The meal was superb, but more importantly, the dinner allowed us to mingle and put a face to a name and talk over what it will take to get these Vermilion muskies to open up and eat a lure.
Several of the guys are still out tonight. I missed a nice fish on a Wabull, only muskie I saw this evening. More tomorrow!

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Actually, it's 175 guys, over 200 with our crew. Two boats caught almost half of the fish reported yesterday...those two are really good on this water!
We just need to keep 'em stuck.
The wind let up yesterday evening, Yooper, and quite a few boats were out after dark. Since you didn't step up and join the Outing or fish the MI event how about you offer something constructive...or nothing at all.
Morning work is done, Thomas Allen Radio show is uploading, and everyone got a nice prize from Spring Bay and MuskieFIRST at the Okuma Fishing Dockside this AM (including an Okuma Muskie rod and a new Okuma Reel), so I can hit the water in a bit.

Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Vermilion doesn't give up the fish very easy,.... A beautiful place that God carved out for our enjoyment and peaceful feelings that it brings ,...... But..... You have to put your time in and work hard in order to be sucessful...Very few and SHORT feeding windows on Big V. Being lucky and Blessed is a must...... also ,thinking outside the "muskie box" is a must.
Wind is just another factor you have to deal with, if I'm up there for 7 days , i'm out on the water, regardless... plenty of places to fish.
I might be up tomorrow after a job related meeting in Virgina.

| 173+ anglers, 11 people caught one. Which means 6% of the Muskies Inc group boated a fish on Wednesday, and those are concentrated in a group of folks that include some of the best ever on that lake. Vermilion in August is tough sledding.
With that many boats on the West Arm, I wonder how many baits have passed over Merry Go Round at this point?

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The Big V was stingy, but showed everyone who fished muskies hard her potential several times as big girls followed, hit and were prematurely released, or were missed. Kim got her personal best this morning at 51 1/8"; Krishna got a 41 and won a custom MuskieFIRST 10th Anniversary hoodie, and a couple smaller fish were caught. Another guest in camp got a 44 this morning. The fact remains, any cast can offer up the Muskie of a lifetime!
The bluegills, pike and perch provided three large evening fish fries for 6 to 8 guests at the Worrall cabin, too. Not a soul complained....and OFM Radio Host Thomas Allen grilled some absolutely life changing venison.
Spring Bay, Steve and Joe, and the family outdid themselves again, offering superb hospitality, excellent food, great digs, and service beyond all expectations. They again gave away a week for two for the largest fish of the Outing, and fed us three nights out of the seven we were here.
Lax reproductions offered a reproduction for the largest fish, a HUGE prize. When added to the free week stay for two, the value is nearly $1500.00 for the prizes.
Thanks to everyone who offered lures and prizes for the dockside demos. Thanks especially to Okuma Fishing for a rod and reel and to Suick Lures, Muskie Armor, Glittertails, Custom Spinners Unlimited, MuskieFIRST Clothing, Spring Bay, Berkley, and Dutch Fork Customs for lures, clothing, and accessories.
We will be back, and the Vermilion muskies and extraordinary Spring Bay Resort hospitality will be waiting.
