Location: Leech Lake, Walker MN | Last week it was hot and humid and the Muskies liked it. Don with guests Mike Vodicka and Toby Sheasby put 5 fish in the boat on Wednssday, all on bucktails. The biggest was 47 inches followed by a 45, 44, 41 and a 40. Mike also had a 48 the day before. Paul Vieth started his trip with a bang with a nice Rowan lake 50. His buddy Mitch Albers caught a 42. Paul's 11 year old son caught 3 muskies a 40, 42 and 45. Bigger fish were seen moving around with the new moon.
This week started out hot & humid water temp up to 78 flat calm. Muskie fishin slow with colf front, many looking but just not biting. That works doesnt it then the temp dropped and its blowing 30 gusting to 50 WOW!. Side ways rain, that was special but with that said, Don had a father and son out and saw 12 and boated 4 from 35, 38, 40 and 42 had 3 others on but got off 47, 48, and 50. Tough to lose those guys...thats fishing.
Dan K. got his 1st Rowan 50 incher in the wind all by him self congrats Kos. FYI...none of these fish were in the wind like we all think they should be. Don't be afraid to throw the book away and look elswere. What bait you ask? Black and silver C.G. s and stump hawgs. Until the next cast.

Thanks again for a great trip to Nielsen's on Rowan Lake. Nothing is better than getting away from the crowds and fishing those monsters muskies that lurk in Rowan. I fish a lot of lakes here in MN, but my muskie fishing highlight each year is up on Rowan. I've made many trips to your lodge over the years and again I was amazed at the fantastic job that you and your staff do. Those new 20hp motors worked great and thanks so much to your guide Paul for taking the time to help the kids in catching all those smallies off the dock!! Our two boys casted for muskies all day and evening and they coulldn't wait to get back to camp to fish those bass off the docks....it's in their blood!
That 50 incher my buddy Paul caught was a real pig and we moved many others like her. Again his son Riley boated 3 fish after last year catching 4 muskies as a 10 year old.
The moment we we got on the plane and left the dock we were already dreaming about coming back next summer!

Location: N.FIB | great fish guys and glad you had a blast,those fly ins are nice.I`ve never been to rowan except to fly in and pick a couple of guys up when I was at upper manitou fishing,nice to have the lake to yourself. |

| Hi Mitch (and Don), i didnt think there were any smallies in Rowan? i though just largemouth? are there really smallies in there? by the way, GREAT TRIP MITCH!!! any boats at camp with bow mounted trolling motors? |

| Hey Tomcat!
Both smallies and largemouth are in Rowan. More largemouth but some nice fish of both species. My son was throwing a lot of smaller bucktails and he was always catching bass and a lot of nice pike. Hill lake and a couple of other smaller lakes can be portaged into from Rowan and have outstanding bass and walleye fishing. Rowan in mostly known as a lake trout / muskie fishery.
Nielsen's has a couple of guide boats available for guests with bow mount trolling motors and 50hp Mercury motors.

| Don, Thanks again for your outstanding hospitality. Riley and I can't wait to come back next year. Rowan Lake is one of my favorite lakes. I'm not sure where else a 11-12 year old can boat 4 muskies (2009) and 3 muskies (2010) each in a 4 day trip. The new 20 hp motors really helped us cover more water.....and not be late for dinner.
Mitch - thanks for all your tips and guidance. We wouldn't have had our great success without it. When you retire from being a professor.....I'm sure Don will have a guide spot waiting for you!!

| How big and difficult are the lake trout in mid-late summer? Just curious if anyone targets them at that time or if everyone sticks to muskies then. Also, from what I can gather an all-inclusive american plan week up there would cost in the neighborhood of $1700, w/out guiding that is? This is definitely one place I want to fish some day.

| Hey Don---good to hear that the season is goin well for you up there. We did the opener in Sioux Narrows and got 15 muskies up to 50 inches that week. We were just up there last week too-----just in time for the rain and cold front to move in and shut everything down. We did get 5 muskies up to 48 inches so I guess we can't complain. Our fish switched from casting to trolling depths when that cold front moved on through-----glad we brought the Depthraiders with us. We are hoping to make it up for one more week in early November(weather permitting , of course). Our last attempt at an Ontario Monster. Stick a pig man------Pat Elza |

| The trout are definately there! Stick to the classic strategies, following the wind rules and get dipsy divers. Use the guide precision trolling to make sure you get to the right depth for the active fish.
While the tendancy is to troll (to cover water) dont forget to allow time to vertical jig and stay on em. Don reminded us of this fact a few years ago.
My plan is always:
Trout early morning
Walleys up to mid day
Pike near deep water islands for a few hours
Musky through to dinner-peak warm water
trout after dinner Cigar and my dad.
The Best resort in Ontario.
