Which line counter reel?

I want to know which line counter reel I should buy for a custom 8' fiberglass sucker rod I am having made.

I will only be using it for sucker fishing and I want a tough, easy to use reel. It needs to have a lever to engage the spool and not click in when the handle is turned like a normal bait caster. A good drag system is also very important.

The rod will handle any musky that ever swam in our seas, now I need a reel

Daiwa SG47-LC. All of the features you're looking for, and just a darn good reel.

I,m not sure why you would need a line couter reel on a sucker rod, but I use the Cabela's and the Diawa's without any trouble for trolling. My buddy has a couple of Okuma's and I'm not sold on those.
For suckers I use 6500C's

Instead of an okuma or diawa you could get a big bad penn 209m (no linecounter, but a big tough reel for a good price) I paid $30 for mine and use it for suckers and trolling. I have it mounted on an 8' fiberglass rod. It has a really good clicker that you can hear from a mile away.

I have the Sealines and like them a lot. Smooth drags and well made. They also have a large star-drag handle that is easy to use. The linecounter itself has never failed me. I've seen the Okumas linecounter feature fail a lot. Sealines are better.

Someone else mentioned the Penn 209. They have the same features as the Sealines except for the linecounter. Another great reel is the Penn Mag 10 if you want something smaller. I use them for my wash rods. The $30 price tag would be for a used reel, not new. I think new, they are in the $59 range, maybe more. However, either way they are great reels. I have a Penn 209 made in the 50s. Parts are still available for it. However, who needs parts - it never breaks. They did it right the first time. Not only that, they are made in the USA!!

Of course none of these reels are for anything but trolling. I don't know why you need a linecounter for sucker fishing. When I use mine (non-lincounters), I mark a distance of one pull on my rod and count the pulls. Works for me.

The 209 for $30 was brand new at walmart. I think no one looks for that kinda thing at walmart...they mostly sell zebcos. So maybe elsewhere you can find one for a good deal. I think the original price was around 50, which is still about half as much as a diawa.

I love my okuma 20dx's. They are more compact than the diawas and I use them alot without a lick of trouble. Much cheaper too. The diawas are nice, no complaints about them either.
