I just borrowed a couple of single clamp down east rod holders to try for muskie trolling . Are the single clamps strong enough ? I'll be trolling from 4 to 6 mph I'm worried about losing a trolling outfit that would really bite losing a rod ,reel and lure !!!!

Personally I think if you can mount it on the transom + use a deep runner in the prop wash you might be ok. I use them but they are either screw mounted or bolted on me side rails. [::)]

I was planning on putting them off the back with the rod tips down . runnning the baits in the wash .I'll give it a shot with some smaller baits first .Maybe a set of doubles for the sides is in order but I don't thing the clamps are wide enough to go on the sides of my crestliner ?

I bolted the holders on the side of my old boat...never have used the clamp ons but w/ the rods going out the back + a straight on strike you should be ok I would think! I have one on each side of my present boat(Carolina Skiff) + have one bolted on the transom.[:sun:]
* just came to me..after getting a good tight twist on them check them on occasion; vibration shouldn't be too bad on the higher trolling speed.

I yanked a single clamp one right off the side of the boat a few years ago when I got a fish on. It now rests on the bottom of Pymatuning. Haven't used a single clamp since.

Jim, your opinion on the transom mount! W/ the strike coming straight back from the rod it shouldn't pull off should it? BUT...I do have mine bolted to the transom...I used stainless bolts + marine sealant when attaching the holder; had some heck-a-cious snaggers + the holder was fine...need more input![:0]

I bought two of the single clamp Down-Easters......too small for muskie rods, go with the double clamp S-10s.....4 up for auction tonight!!!!!

I wouldn't use the single clamp. I like the security of having double clamps on the transom.

Sponge, I'd agree with the transom mount it should work OK. I'd just feel a lot better with the double clamp.

I would not put the safety of my $300 outfit as well as a muskie in a single clamp down easter as much as I would trust a plastic rod holder. Hold onto your rods or get the S10's.

We have both types and they seem to do the job, we run the singles off the back in the propwash with the rods in the water and we run double clamps on are 10 footers out to the sides of the boat in the water. The main thing is to make sure the drag is set right!!Also check every once in awhile that they are tight. Trolling at the higher speed will losen them up. We trolled for three days in the MuskieFirst outing and did not have any trouble. Just check them for being tight.

Ferd, go with the S-10 double clamps! If you are going to speed troll with bigger baits like the Legend Perchbait there is a lot of torque on those rod holders. I know of two people who have had the single clamps twist on them. Not worth taking a chance of losing equipment or a big muskie IMHO.
