Location: Richfield, MN | Kinda surious what the Okuma reels are like for pulling doubles and heavie lures.
I was out looking at there website and was reading about the Akena 250 and the 400 series round reels. I am wondering if anyone has used these and how do they hold up to the abouse that double blades can do to a reel.
WOuld like to here peoples opinions.
If not for doubles how would they be for just lures in the 1-6oz range.
Thanks |

Location: Northern Wisconsin | From what I have read they are ok reels for smaller lures that don't create too much resistance but probably not the reel for double 10's. |

Location: Des Moines IA | Okuma has two saltwater reels coming out soon for double tens. The Akenas probably aren't your best bet for double tens.

Location: Bloomington, IL | I have a few Okuma Indurons (250s and 400s). I have power handles on my 400s and they worked just fine pulling double 10s for the 11 days I spent in Canada this summer. I love my Indurons. Now, if I'm not mistaken, the Akena basically replaced the Induron, I think you'll be pleased, especially if you can get a power handle for it.
Hope this help. Good luck! |

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | The double paddle handle on the Akena basically elimnates the need for a power handle. It is about 1/2" (guestimate) longer than the Induron handle and the paddles are also longer. Is it going to burn a d-10 as easy as a big saltwater reel? No. If you want a reel that is a great all around reel that will do a good job with d-10's it is a great reel. |

| The akena is a $100 reel. Nothing more, nothing less. It seems like its built tough, with little in the way of any "new technology". I have one, it works well, just what i expected from a $100 no-frills reel. This is the best way to sum it up as far as i am concerned. I don't pull dbl 10;s with mine, but i am sure it can be done. One thing to mention, check the thumb bar. Mine sticks pretty bad and takes a little big to depress. everyone of them at the store was the same way. |

| I have not fished the Akena, but as someone on here had said, it is supposed to be the replacement for the induron. I have 2 induron 400's and they are great. For pulling the big baits the power handle is a must. I had a standard handle on mine and tried pulled double 10's with it and it about wore my wrist out....I then bought a power handle and couldn't believe the difference! I can pull double 13's comfortably with the reel now.....how long would it pull double 13's? That I don't know, I just pulled them for a few casts to see if it would do it. They are built very simply inside and there are only 3 gears inside that would wear out and most of the time it's just the the one I think they called it a pinion gear, but anyway, you can replace them all for like $10, so even if you burned it up, it wouldn't cost alot to repair in comparison with the more expensive reels. The guy who talking about their new saltwater series is correct, they are supposed to practically be designed for pulling double 10's and 13's. As far as the Akenas for other lures...I think you would be very satisfied. I fish mine alot with the power handle on big grandma cranks, depth raiders, mepps musky killers, chatterbaits, and the list goes on. They are a great reel for the money and they will leave an abu 6500 c3 in the dust, that would be why mine ( 6500 ) is not on any of my musky rods. If you are wanting a reel for constantly pulling double 10's and 13's check out the diawa saltists.....that's what I recently bought and I haven't put anything on the end of it that I can even tell is on the other end of the line, that thing is rediculous as far as power. I think I could tie 3 double 13's together and pull them all with no problem if I wanted to. Hope this helps. Thanks |

Location: Richfield, MN | Thanks to all for your insight into the reel in question. I was just reading on-line about the reel and was curious.
I know as far as the brand goes I have a buddy of mine that is a walleye man and he likes his reels. But then again he is just fishing walleyes that if you whistle just right will come to the boat like your pet dog will!!!!!!!
Thanks for the video on the new reel coming out. Will be interesting to see how everyone reacts to them.
Thanks once again to all. I truly do like this site for all the help everyone gives. Wether it is positive or negative it is great to here what peoples thoughts are about different issues.
Thanks

| Why is it that when somebody has any negative feedback about okuma products, it gets taken off the forum????? People should know about the negative aspects of these products. Just like any other products that people discuss on these forums.
Thank You |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Because no product bashing is allowed. You were WAY over the line. Everyone knows all reels..all brands..will break. Okuma has a great customer service department and Mark Rogers, AKA California_Muskie is a regular and helps out quite a bit.
Okuma encourages constructive criticism, in fact, but we cannot allow folks to begin acting like this is their personal web complaint board...it isn't. The resulting train wreck is impossible for us to manage. If one has a product problem...obviously, one needs to contact the manufacturer or warranty service.
The experience with any warranty service can be and IS subjective. Many folks are very happy with the very same service some want to howl about; doesn't matter the product or company. MuskieFIRST will offer a balanced perspective as long as the comments; both positive and negative, are within our posting permissions.
I had an early Okuma 250 Induron that had a clutch issue. I sent it in, and they fixed it. I've had issues with every brand out there , and I've owned them all. I took them in for repair if they were out of warranty, and sent them in for warranty if they were covered.
This isn't Consumer Reports Open Blog; MuskieFIRST a copyrighted publication, and we have absolutely no way to know if anyone's claims are accurate or not and most cases couldn't check each claim for accuracy if we had to because registrations are usually not complete with phone numbers and contact information, much less real names (for example, your name is listed as...Grant), so we require they are reasonable no matter what the brand is and will not apologize for that. |
