Poll: Night Fishing Baits

I'm hoping to get some feed back on what types of baits have been successful for night fishing. By night fishing I mean dark out, not dusk. Lures you personally know have caught fish. I usually fish clearer lakes at night.

So far the only baits I have had luck with are black bucktails with silver, chart, and orange blades. During the summer on clear lakes, casting.

Please specify water clarity, trolling or casting, time of year.

I think, with some participation in this thread, it will become very informative for everyone.

I only night fish muskies during the hot weather periods (July/August) so all my nightime fish have been during summer period and on reasonably clear water lakes in Vilas County Wisconsin by casting. Motor trolling isn't permitted.

* Black Bucktail (Rattletail) with silver blade (New/Full Moon Periods)
* Mepps Musky Killer (Black Tail/Blade) (New/Full Moon Periods)
* Topraider (Black Bird) (New Moon Periods)
* Straight Depthraider (Cisco Blue) (Full Moon Period)
* Straight Depthraider (Black Cisco Prism) New Moon Period)
* Jointed Creeper (Brown/Orange) (Full Moon Period)
* 10" Burt (Black) (New/Full Moon Periods)
* Wakemaker (Tenn/Shad) (New Moon Period)
* Giant Jackpot (Tenn/Shad) (New Moon Period)

I haven't done a lot of nightfishing, only a couple of times actually, but here are the baits I used:
- giant jackpot: tennessee shad
- legend husky: redhead
- swim whizz 8" jailbird
- bill lewis supertrap

caught on the last three baits

Black creepers and hog wobblets have always worked good for me. There's nothing quite like a topwater hit when it's pitch black out. Just be careful on the hookset!

Best year ever for night fishing for my girlfriend and I. Most of it is on medium stain water(though we've had a few hits on a very dark flowage, it has not been as consistant as the slightly clearer systems we've been hitting north of here). When I night fish, I primarily fish shallower areas as I like to fish surface baits, though when I fish the real clear stuff, a certain crank is my fav.:

My best lures this year are: Hawg Wobbler(got my first 50 on one a couple weeks ago an hour after dark, and girlfriend has had lots of action on it too)
Topraider
Pacemaker(4 hits in one night with 2 nice ones boated)
Fetch and Catch(my all time favorite night lure)
RYlur Globe
Jointed Trophy Diver(my favorite crank for clearer crankin)
Hellraiser bear paw black/orange blade(I don't buy into the silver blade as the only good blade theory, orange has worked better for us and it makes plenty of a racket as the paint has worn away from where it hits the body exposing metal).

As far as color goes, bullfrog has been best in the fetch and catch as it is the only thing I have, T-shad in the cranks, black or yellow topraider, green pacemaker. As you see, color really makes no difference to me. I used to swear by black, now I realize the fish do not care, and will find anything in the shallow mostly clear water I'm pitching in. They are just happy the jet skis are in for the night.

bttt

Still waiting for someone to say something about rubber baits.

I've heard some talk about night fishing with Live Action lures, but want more details.

Big Black Spinnerbaits. They have a Good silouette. They are weed resistant (key) and they can be fished deep and/or shallow and/or on the top (cresent wrench factor).

You always want to stay "hassle free" at night.

Don't forget the classic black Muskie Jitterbug. I change out the hooks and add split rings to them.

esox masq:

Question:??

Doesn't adding split rings to Jitterbugs cause your hooks to foul beneath the body?

I put split rings on most of my musky lures too which don't come that way but found that with Jitterbugs and Creepers it caused hook fouling and so I have removed them from those lures.
