Location: VA | I bought 2 Joe Bucher 7 strand 90lb leaders the other day, I was working and didn't give them a really good look until later. Seems the leaders have the swivel and the snap TIED on with the 7 strand leader material itself, no crimps, nothing, ....just tied on. Are all of Joe's leaders this way? Or did I pick up a couple duds?

Location: Yahara River Chain | Joe 7-strands have always been tied that I am aware of. Years ago, I knew of guys buying them trying to copy the knots and make their own tied 7-strand leaders.

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Why would it be an issue? It's entirely feasible to tie 90lb 7-strand, just not in your average basement workshop. My personal outlook is: less hardware, is better. Why would they be duds?
Can you post some pic's?
Have fun!

Location: Twin Cities, Minnesota | Hi Everyone,
I am a long time lurker and first time poster. After reading this thread, I thought I would take the plunge and join this great forum. Maybe I'll have something useful to contribute.
I have been making my own leaders out of 90 lb. 7 Strand for over ten years now and have been tying them to quality components (ball bearing swivels, stringease stay lok snaps only) without a single failure on numerous Muskies up to 52.5" (not mine but a friend using my leaders). Don't need any exotic equipment either - only my hands and a pair of needlenose pliers and the pliers are used to hold the tag line while you cinch the knot down with your other hand. Once the leader is used and kinked, simply cut off the components with wire cutters, and reuse on a fresh piece of 7-Strand cut to the lenght of your liking.
Joe ties a great knot and I would trust it without worry. I think I tie a pretty good one too and have never missed using crimps.
Hope this helps. Thanks for letting me share. |

| Agree 100% with above poster (welcome aboard). I tie leaders the same way. Figure 8 knot is what AFW recommends on their 7x7 Surfstrand and I have not had a failure yet. They also recommend that you heat the wire before cutting to fuse the ends (also to prevent fraying). I also leave a small tag end on the wire and use two pieces of shrink tube (put them on before tying on the other end) on each end to hold the wire tag down and keep it from fraying or tangling.
I have a small finishing nail in my workbench that I use to keep tension on the leader, then use needle nose vice grips to work the tag end of the knot.
Now that you know it is that easy, you will undoubtedly want to start tying your own. You can tie them for pennies instead of spending $5 to $7 on a single leader

| Surfstrand instructions attached. I fugure if it is good enought to catch sharks, it should work fine on muskies. When tying I try to keep the leader side stationary and pull mostly on the tag end. The wire will kink slightly where it pulls through the knot. By pulling the tag end through you put the kink on that side and eliminate the kink on the leader side.
The 7X7 wire is much more flexible and actually more durable due to its flexibility in comparison to 1x7. The weakest link on my leaders is almost always the coastlock snap which gets bent over time.

Location: VA | Here is one of the two Leaders I spoke of. Each end of the same leader is pictured. I NEVER said they were "duds" only asked if they were, so read more carefully before bashing statements.
Looking at them, I just felt like they were a "little rough" for $5.00 each.

| Yake Bait, thanks for the info. I've been trying to make decent trailer hooks for some baits, and the surfstrand pdf's have really helped. thanks again. |

| I have too... Had a high 40's fish roll on a magic maker, unsnap and straighten the snap taking the lure with it back to the depths. haven't used those types of snaps since |

Location: VA | These snaps are pretty darn tough, nearly takes two hands to open and close one. I think the snaps are fine to be honest, as is the swivel. The knots were a 1st for me, and I just felt a little worried about them. I bought these locally, but next time I think I'll just order out instead.
