July came in hot and left hotter. The last two days of the week before the change over produced several nice fish for our guests. Weeds were the main structure element. Here are some photos from Thur/Fri July 29/30 out of the Berkley boat with Captain Mark Sexton in charge. What a great two days for Mark, Doug, Jeff and the dockhand they let tag along one afternoon. These fish were caught on Northland Booty Call Spinner baits, Northland Double 8 Boobie Traps, Gerry's Girl Double 10, and another homemade Double 10.

This week has seen fish in the weeds again, but also more reports of activity on rock structure. Old school is the key so far this week, with fish hitting single bladed bucktails like they are going out of style. Well, they did go out of style didnt they? Looks like I'll be digging in the closet for the seldom used stuff before my next trip out on the lake. Black/orange again is a hot colour from the reports I'm getting.

Water temps in the mid 70s up towards 80-81 in some areas of Sabaskong. The cleaner water the last week or so has been the area east of Morson in Sabaskong. Winds have been light and algae has been settling on the surface to the west of us in most areas.

Very impressive! We actually ran into the guys at the gas station Saturday morning. I agree Thursday and Friday were the hot days out there. Most of our fish came off the rocks. Where did you find decent weeds? I felt like we fished solid from Miles to Nestor Falls and I can count on one hand the amount of quality cabbage we found.

Build some more cabins so we can stay at your place!

I wasn't privy to where they fished every day, but they ranged east towards the King Island area out to the Little Traverse. In my experience that last couple of years, you dont need a lot of quality cabbage to find fish. If we have seen a little bit of cabbage, even amongst other weeds..then it's been likely to hold fish when they are using weeds.

Reports were a little slower for most this past week. Lots of fish looking, but not aws many eating. Single blades baits were the ticket earlier in the week. Still getting fish to follow double 10s as the week progressed. More than one nice fish was caught throwing back with a small bucktail afer following a bigger one in.

I cannot report the mid lake rock bite being on as of yet. Still more fish in weeds, bays, points and shoreline rocks. Weed edges were more likely to hold fish than up tight in the thicker stuff.

Still some nice fish caught this week up to 50 inches.

Several more boats will be chucking baits this week. Hope to have some good reports of the activity again next week.

Good luck to everyone on the water, wherever you might be chasing big toothy critters.

Fished 7-31 to 8-6 out of red wing lodge. We seen probably 12-15 muskies and boated 3. I finally got my first a 44 incher. I also boated a 30 inch and my partner a 41. seen a fish swipe at a top raider 3 times but never actually had it in its mouth. we had a good week and also seen a moose.

Any word from you folks fishing/fished Sabaskong recently? I've heard weather has been unstable to say the least. I'm heading up on Saturday and am chomping at the bit to hear any reports or conditions.

Been blowing like a bugger since Saturday morning. Many people aren't even venturing out on the lake. Massive cold front with temps in the 50s this morning.

Forecast is better for the weekend so you can be darn glad you didn't arrive Saturday Aug 14 instead.

Needless to say, bite has been tough for anyone on the water.

I managed to get out for a few hours with a father/son that just arrived that afternoon in the run-up to the hard winds on Friday evening and we had action from 3 fish in about 10 mins on the same spot. It was a rocky point with boulders and some grass that had the wind blowing right in, althought it wasnt not wavey because of protection from islands. You could feel the current moving into the point though.

The father caught two fish on black/organge topwater out of the 3 that showed themselves. The bigger fish did not get hooks. 33 and 36 inches were landed so nothing major, but still a fun period right around sunset.

Water temp was 74 Friday night and will have dropped quite a bit since then.

Wind finally laid down a bit after 4 days of blowing. Action was good for our group of anglers, especially considering the massive cold front that had just gone through.

Topwater and spinner baits seemed to draw the most attention from the fish for our people.

Weather looks to be stabilizing for the coming days and could make the weekend a great time to be on the water.

Two major fronts in the last 10 days with a lot of wind made things interesting for anglers. Last week, it wasn't very fishable until tuesday/wed and then things started to pick up a bit.

Friday produced a 48.5" personal best for one of our guests. They fished their usual August areas for this time of the year..points, reed/rock combos and shorelines and had some action. Double Cogwgirl juniors were the hot bait of the week.

Saturday saw the temps rise again and brought water temps up fast into the mid 70's after a few days in the high 60s with the cold front effects. It was high sky and no wind, which made it a tough day to fish all day, but I got out with a from from 9:30-5:30 and we raised 11 fish, but only had 2 hitters. Most fish followed bucktails, but also had one follow a topwater and a couple follow spinner baits. We could not find a pattern, which made it tough because you had to fish everything. Fish came off shoreline rocks, rock/weed combo, sand/weed, reed.sand, small points, bigger points.

The most agressive followers were on the bucktails and the fish landed and the one that hit were on bucktails as well. A 46 incher drilled a shumway screamer and was pinned right in the corner of the mouth. Great fight for a bruiser summer fish. My buddy had bad luck on a hookset when the mid 40 incher head shook and opened up right as he was drilling the hooks of the double 10 home. I was ducking with the bait flying up and in towards the front of the boat. Black/orange raised the most fish that day. Northland boobie trap (double 8) and booty call spinners got the fish's attention, but we threw some other stuff as well.

Wind started again Sunday and has been blowing ever since. Got some reports of a few fish raised and one caught by a dock customer that spent the day trying to hide from the wind. There is just no getting away from it when it's blowing at 20 and gusting to 30.

Slight better today and tomorrow so hopefully everyone in the area can get out and find some fish. An identifiable pattern would be nice! One of these weeks, the fish will be using the same kind of structure for more than 2 days at a time!!
