Location: Hayward, WI | Don't you hate it when this happens... and you don't end up with a fish in the boat? I was studying the map on my GPS unit (maybe a little too intensely) when this fish hit mabe 10 feet out from the boat. Didn't feel anything until I reeled back down for another pull. Just in time to feel a last headshake of the fish getting rid of the bait (I think). Nohing there when I set the hook.
Hard to believe that these fish can hit a bait and have a freshly sharpened hook in their mouth and not get hooked. About the same thing happened to me with a Pounder last year. Darn fish!

Location: N.FIB | I`ve been using dawgs alot the last couple of years and getting head hit most of the time, except the pike which ruin the lure most of the time.the last fish I had hit was the same way as you just described, the slice was even more in front of the lure than the pic you showed.I was using the gregg thomas leader and think it would of cut through any flouro leader,it bent the hell out of the wire on the leader, and didn`t get hooked or not hooked for more than 5 seconds.I`m gonna try to put a split ring with a hook by the front of the lure and see if that works,if the water temps would cool in my area I could get out and fish and try it.I also picked up some of those twisted tubilee baits because the body of them is thinner, haven`t got to use them yet but I`m thinking maybe if the fish head hits that lure the hookups will be better. |

| Sharpen those hooks! It doesn't appear they have been touched

Hooks were sharp as could be. The top one by the bait's fin looks blunt because it's stuck in the plastic.
If you were being serious, there's your answer. If you were being sarcastic... then joke taken!

Location: Utah | We've had this happen more than we care to mention. Hooks are sharp because we sharpen them often...we've replaced hooks etc...especially with the lures we use often. We've been told and also think'n the fish hits the lure just right and pins the hook(s) against the body of the lure. Thoughts on that assumption??? Some folks have mentioned to 'T' the middle treble. Haven't done that...has anyone experimented with 'T'ing your lure hooks? |

Location: Michigan | I think people who are missing/losing lots of fish on the bait are giving the bait too much slack and aren't keeping in touch with the bait to feel the hit and give a proper hook set. I fish a ton of SuperDs/Dawgs and will miss a fish every now and then, but catch a lot more than I miss. Make sure to keep in constant contact with the bait so you can feel every little thing that happens. |

Location: Hayward, WI | I also agree that most of the hits on rubber baits ends up with the fish getting hooked. It is important to keep contact with the bait. I jig fished walleyes and such for years, so I understand that. I think the other important lesson here is to ALWAYS pay attention. I wasn't concentrating on the MOST important thing at the time, and it potentially cost me a fish. I never saw the fish that hit, so I didn't get too worked up about missing what was most likely an upper 30 inch fish. However, if I had KNOWN it was a 50 incher and I missed it because I wasn't paying attention, that would have been a different story (and it COULD have been a big fish for all I know).
I also agree about the Hardheads. I think I only lost one fish on them, and that was when I first got the bait and forgot to sharpen the hooks first... Seems like if a fish nails a Hard Head, the fish ends up in the net.
