I fish rivers more than lakes, and find, that late august and early september is when the big frogs start jumping in off the bank. The orange or yellow belly jackpot is good, also, I've had good luck with most noisy topwaters. The orange and black suspending suick has been good in late summer. Thanks for bring up the reel survey.[;)]

casting 8" reef hawgs and really slamming them down with pulls of 3 feet long and no pause included. And casting heavy spinnerbaits in black skirts and hammered brass size 7 colorado blades, retrieved at the same speed throughout the retrieve. Because they are heavy I think i loose a lot of fish but no smaller lures provoke strikes

Jason this Monday and Tuesday we hit the 90s in the am so casting was not to productive. So we put the top up and trolled but the winds also picked up in the afternoons turning the fish on as well as air conditionoing for the fishermen. Fish are still in the weeds but some have already moved to the primary breaks. Trolling spinnerbaits is still effective over the weeds and on the edges. A few fish are been caught deeper trolling believers but no really big ones yet just a lot of fish in the 40s. As for casting just like always if I can't move them with the spinnerbaits I will switch to slower moving jerkbaits like reef hawgs and sledges and if that fails normaly by 11 or 12 I'm off trolling till I get a 6th sense about casting a spot on the spot. [:p]

By the way the water temps have been anywhere from 71 to 80 this last week or so. These rivers can have temp break line where an incoming river's waters will be 71 and the main river 75 and other days where on a 2 mile trolling pass your gage will go up and down from 75 to 79 like a heart monitor. [:sun:]

P.S. More then half the fish boated so far have been casting.

The month of august has really been good for me. earlier monthes we seen alot of fish following, more than past years but less eaters. This month its turned completely around, less follows and a whole lot more eaters. We've been getting them on about everything. Gliders and cranks seemed to work early and are still producing but bucktails and surface baits have really turned on.

I have had all of my action for the last two weeks concentrated on either rock structure or sharp breakline areas. It seems like any small patch of cabbage on a sharp breakline is holding fish at some point during the day. I have also been finding fish concentrating on the windblown breaks on rock reefs. It seems to me as if the suspended fish are starting to move up on structure, is anyone else finding that?

Gliders and topwaters are coming on in my area. The topwater bite keeps getting better as we head into September.

Bulging very big bucktails is finnally coming into its own on the shallow flats, and surface baits are only getting more confidence as Jono said. This has been the most awesome surface bait season ever, and I hope it lasts another couple months! I've also noted a definate preferance towards yellow and green surface baits as the season progresses on my river, though this year it has not happened yet, hmmmmmm(I'll watch the frogs).
