| I am headed out tomorrow morning at 5 AM to Escanaba for a promotion/seminar with Chief Papineau, (a top Walleye Pro) at the State Fair. From there, I head to Michigan to see a few boat dealers, and then....Larry Jones has MUSKIES I need to catch!!
I will be posting details and pictures as a telephone line allows for the computer from the Lake Chautauqua MuskieFIRST outing. This is new water to me, so I am looking forward to the weekend. Then, pack up and work through Southern Michigan seeing boat dealers again, getting back in the office just in time for Mr. Golden's Auction for Ashton!!!
Purple Haze 2 is in tow, and I have an empty seat if anyone is fishing the event and wants to show me the water....I have a new radiator, fan clutch, fan blades, thermister, manifold gasket, Oxygen sensor, oil change, and wash job on the Trooper, so NO EXCUSES!!![:praise:]

| Hello from St Ignace, Michigan! (HOME OF $80 SUPER 8 ROOMS)
The State Fair fishing show in Escanaba was a hoot, featuring Mark Martin, Mike Gofron, Chief Papineau, Darrel Christianson, and a couple of Muskie anglers, too. There were food booths EVERYWHERE, and the weather was perfect.
A couple days on the road, and OFF to Chautauqua!!! [:0] [8)]
| | |
| The Chautauqua Lake MuskieFIRST outing ended today with an incredible total of 69 muskies meeting the outing 30" minimum. The largest for the outing was a 50.5! 74 anglers hit the water Friday, Saturday, and Sunday under partly cloudy, warm and humid conditions.
In first place is Kevin Selders with 10 (yes, 10!!) muskies. He also won the big fish prize donated by Beckman nets Saturday with a 44" fish and today with a 45". Kevin and his partner caught 13 total, trolling on the south end of the system.
Captain Larry Jones hosted the event with the Chautauqua Lake Muskie Hunters Chapter of Muskies Inc. The Saturday night raffle held after the steak dinner served by the Casino Restaraunt raised nearly $2000 for the club, more than enough to complete the stocking program the club planned for this year! Larry ran a superb event, and made sure no one left the meetings hungry.
I will be posting more details and pictures later in the week as I recover from the early to rise and late to sleep schedule Crash and his partner and son Justin from Cave Run, Kentucky kept for the weekend sticking to Captain Larry's schedule. Crash and I insisted on pitching the weedlines despite the super active trolling bite, and managed to put one in the boat today, seeing two more. Justin and his partner saw a PIG and stuck a 36. I had a great trip!!
I highly recommend that anyone within range of this event attend next year. The drive was 8 hours from Chicago, so definitely in range for the Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Indiana anglers. The fishery is incredible!
Much more later...I have some good pictures of some of the fish, the group, awards, and more. It was great to meet so many of the MuskieFIRST visitors and members from the Muskie East!!
| | |
| WOW!!!
That is one incredible outing!
Congrats! | |
| | |
| Here is the group at the Banquet last night in downtown Chautauqua! | |
| | |
| Thick One,
Many of the anglers there were interested in the Monster Outing on Cass. We will need to have another there next year!! There also will be some anglers from this group joining us in Kentucky next Spring.
Looking forward to September...[:sun:]
| | |
| Very Impressive!!!!!!!
Do you have a list of who and what on the fish?
Did you take video of the event?
| | |
| I have pictures galore of the event, and a few fish pics too. More to come! | |
| | |
| I just wanted to say that our crew had a great time attending this tournament. The support from the sponsors was fantastic (one heck of a raffle!) and you folks at MuskieFirst did a great job in putting it together and making it work well. I think Captain Larry Jones lost 10 pounds from all of the running around even after those meals that were served! It was nice to meet you Steve (only briefly) and we are hoping that you folks are looking at coming out this way again next year...we'll be back for this one!
I also want to say congrats to Harry Marfin on boating that 50.5 on the first day of the tournament...it was his first and long time coming. And to Adam and Bill Andresky an "atta boy!" for boating nine muskies on the second day of the tournament. The same goes out to Kevin Selder and Chris Hamerick...those guys hammered them! [:praise:]

| Great Outing,Good Food and alot of fun.We were fortunate,as fishing seemed slow for many.Chautauqua is a great lake with many ways and patterns working at the same time.Hope to see many of you again next year and on the water yet this year.

| | |
| Will, So how did you do? Sounds like the lake was on fire! I got 2 at Leesville on Saturday, trolling. Sounds like you guys had a great time, wish I could have made it. | |
| | |
| Hi Tom. Actually the fishing at Chautauqua was on the slow side (for most people) if you can believe that. I only boated two at 33 and 35 inches for the weekend (plus a bonus 23 inch walleye that grabbed my Wiley jerkbait on the firgure 8), but I also lost a big girl at boat side. At that time I was trolling a crank bait that club member Steve Warner has been making and he sent me a few to test drive to see how I liked them. His baits have a wide wobble to them and can be tuned to run fast (at least 6 mph) so that fit the bill for the algae bloomed water we were fishing in. We had that fish up by the boat but she was just out of net reach and she swam past us and towards the bow. That is when we got a real good look at her huge head and girth. Unfortunately that is when we also seen the one hook that used to be in the edge of her lip come out and we watched her swim back into the depths... [:0]
It is one of those fish that you just sit down and talk to yourself about for several hours...but at least we got to see her.
| | |
| I'm glad that everyone had a great time at the MuskieFIRST Chautauqua Lake Outing.Actualy the fishing was on the slow side for what this Lake can produce normaly this time of the year.I'm sorry if in all the running around that I missed talking with anyone or gave the impression that I was looking through you,but things were moving very fast keeping on top of everything.I enjoyed every minute of this Outing, especialy the late night chats with Steve,Crash & Justin.Steve will post the results and some great pictures soon.I hope his new boat trailer tires get him back home in one peice!
Yes,we will have the MuskieFIRST Chautauqua Lake Outing again next year and it will be on an even bigger format with large cash prizes, judge boats, dinners etc.,with 150 two man teams! But as with this Outing, part of the Entree Fee and all donated Items will be used for a Raffle to support the Lake that we used, thru the Chautauqua Lake Musky Hunters Club and the NY State Pendergast Musky Hatchery. Many Thanks goes out for all the support we got from the many Musky Tackle and Related Companys,I will be personaly thanking you via mail soon. Were in the planning stage now for the 2003 MuskieFIRST Chautauqua Lake Outing and will announce the dates
early this fall.I also must thank everyone that joined us for three great days of fun and fishing, just goes to show that a few of us can make a big impact toward making a good fishery even better,by giving back to the resource. As Steve said we helped the CLMHC raise around $2000.00,they will purchase baitfish to feed the Musky Fry at the Pendergast Hatchery.
Watch for more to come about the Outing from the Best One Handed Lug Wrench on a Trailer Tire Stick in the Musky World!SpongeBob everyone wanted to know why the Famous Witty One never showed? Capt. Larry

Congratulations, everyone, and see you there next year!!!!
I nominate the Thick One to drive with me out there next year with Jason Smith following behind so I have help changing the tires, and someone with a huge boat to carry the necessary spares, and the trolling knack to get into the fish out there!! Slamr needs to attend because the folks out there want to meet him, and Sponger HAS to go so I have Paydays and Coca Cola in the boat for Crash. Justin needs to be there so I have someone else to talk to who casted all day. Punch and Judy need to attend so I can have good photographic challenges. Worm Drowner has to be there again, and all the rest of the group from this year, too!!!!! Larry Jones needs to bring an alarm clock, Equal for the coffee, and I need to bring a pair of gloves for working on my tires.
Captain Larry, THANKS!! I had a great time. Crash, it was a good time on the water. Justin, keep chunking those lures out there, the big girls will come. You will be gray haired and aching like your Dad before you even realize it; that is the way of Muskie Anglers who chose to go for the brass ring and make a living out of the sport they love.
More to follow! | |
| | |
| Here is Harry Marfin's 50.5!! | |
| | |
| Thanks Larry, wish I could have made it![:blackeye:] Has been a weird yr. thus far but should get better over the next few months. Have fished w/ Crash + Justin + nothing but good memories! Hopefully I can make it next yr...I still gotta come up for the auction trip![:sun:] | |

| Some of the MuskieFIRST anglers at the landing after day one!![:0] [::)] [8)] [:)] [;)] | |
| | |
| Sounds like a great time. Let's face it though, the only reason so many fish were caught is because Cady did not go![;)]
Any other shots of the one in the tan shorts?[8)]
| | |
| The one in the tan shorts is Judy as in "Punch and Judy". Punch might get a little jealous of your sinful thoughts![:0] [;)] | |
| | |
| Hey then good for them, I said it with all due respect. Glad he lives far away. I am in shape now and can run fast so I can say these things.[;)] | |
| | |
| How do you think he got the name "PUNCH"? This is obviously not your run of the mill puppet show folks...Judy is a postal peep, thus making her all the more likely to survive rough days on the water + subjugate poor Punch into submission![;)] Are all these people waiting on a ferry or something? [:0] | |
| | |
| SPonge,
Yes, the Muskie Fairy.[]
| | |
| Can anybody recommend a good wine to go with shoe leather?[:0] | |
| | |
| Many thanks to Larry Jones, Steve Worrall, Mike Sperry, Roger Bender and all the great people that made the 1st Annual MuskieFirst LAKE CHAUTAUQUA, NY outing such a great success (last weekend). It was "1st Class" all the way! [:)] [:)] [:)] | |
| | |
| We are already in the proccess of setting up next years Outing. We will change to a two day format because many could not get the friday off in the middle of the summer without taking a whole weeks vacation from work.I would also move the Outing to July 12th & 13th,the earlier dates will put casting on the same level as the trolling. There were many requests that we go to a 2-Man Team Tournament with a 150 Team Limit.Going with the Team Format,I would also go with the Judge Boat Format,12 Judge Boats,5 North Basin--5 South Basin and 2 in the middle.I will sitdown soon and figure out the projected cost, including putting money taken in back to the Fishery, dinners etc.,then come up with what Cash Prizes can be offered.I would like to keep the signup cost at $150 per 2-Man Team. Many thanks to the Chautauqua Lake Musky Hunters Club,Steve Worrall MuskieFIRST,Crash & Justin Mullins,Fishman,Punch & Judy and all the rest of you for helping make this years Chautauqua Lake Outing a Great Success. | OUCH! [:0] [:0] | |
| | |
| My partner did catch fish and lost a few also.We were on em,Get over it. Kevin | |
| | |
| Yes, anon, his partner did. He was pretty frustrated, especially since he was in second after the first day!!
That happens when trolling, and even some days casting.[] [:sun:]
| | |
| Kevin is a good fisherman, and he also seems to be luckier than most! He catches a bunch of muskies, and it seems that many guys are jealous of him. I did catch a few fish, but I also lost some and had other hits that didn't "hook up". I've fished with Kevin a few times when the luck was on my side and not his, but it just wasn't my turn. We had a lot of action, but the fish just weren't cooperating with me! As a matter of fact, I'm starting to notice that here lately, the fish don't cooperate with me at all!! | |
| | |
| Hey Larry...Are we on for this next year? | |
| | |
| Jason,
I'm not sure yet! There are a few things in the way at the present time, number of Tournaments on Chautuaqua Lake this year,my vacation around the plant shutdown has changed to July, instead of August. There is a big money Tournament already on Chautauqua Lake during the same time that I'm off.Plus there are about 4 other Muskies Inc. Chapter Outings in a row as well.I'm looking at the possability of having an October MuskieFirst Outing on the Niagara River for 2003 and then back to Chautauqua Lake for 2004,alternating each year.
I will post more when I get things setup.
